SF Saiyuuki Starzinger
add

The two shows are very much different, but Belamis in Starzinger is basically Oscar from Versailles. In a world of space cyborgs she uses an electric sword and wields it with great dexterity. Only introduced in episode 36 of 73, she is motivated to fight for justice and prove her mettle and thus develops a complicated relationship with the heroes of the show, mostly fighting against them. Her design is obviously inspired by Oscar.

Tatakae!! Iczer-1
add

It is a lot of fun to see just how much Rayearth II references Iczer-1 while the two shows are very much different. Toshiki Hirano directed both and did the character designs for Iczer. I think its no surprise to learn that Iczer-1 is Hikaru, but I won't tell you all the parallels, have fun finding them.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena
add

Evangelion and Utena both use a plethora of references and opulent symbolism to arrive at fundamental psychological themes by way of genre deconstruction while using genre limitations to their advantage. Both stories culminate in a sort of grand cataclysm that attempts to give insight into the human condition. One could find many parallels plotwise, and given their functions in the plot there is a number of characters who are much alike one another: Anthy-Rei, Akio-Gendo, Mikage-Ritsuko, Nanami-Kaji, Touga-Misato, Utena-Shinji. This is not my novel-sized essay on the many and deep similarities between the two shows, so you'll just have to trust me on it. And Anno and Ikuhara are close friends, too. Utena is less depressive for the most part, and a bit less experimental, while it deals more with actual relationships.

Akira
add

The character Vegeta in Dragonball is based on Tetsuo from Akira. Also the quickly escalating conflicts and the near-cosmic level of destruction in both these action manga makes them similar, if the difference in tone is significant (Akira is grittier and darker). Two cult works, if you went through the one there is reason enough to go through the other.

Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster
add

Obviously, the works of an artist will share similarities and themes between them more often than not, and it is so with Hideaki Anno, too. But this goes further than that - it is inspiring in a way to have two shows that share so many and so deep similarities to yet be so strikingly unique in their own right. Don't delay watching the other one if you have seen one of the pair, as these shows are unquestionably linked and offer very different visions of two remarkable world that could have been the same if the retelling was lazy enough.

Know that surreal explosion (or implosion rather) that emanates as an orb of darkness and engulfs nearly everything as it spreads unfathomable world-shattering destruction as it spreads into the distance? Well, both shows have it, they even came out the same year. If you appreciated the one, you might want to check out the other.

Paris no Isabelle
add

When the acclaimed manga Rose of Versailles was set to get an anime adaptation, it was a given that someone would try to match it in regards of subject matter and theme, and so we got Isabelle of Paris. Both shows came out in 1979, both have a female lead who is good with a sword and looks good in a (male) military uniform, both have lots of melodrama as the world burns, and both use revolutionary Paris as their location, just for Versailles it's 1789 and for Isabelle it's 1870. Both even feature a vigilante figure wearing a domino mask.

Many similarities exist between the two shows, but I find this one compelling: both have a character named Miki who is a naive idealist for whom music has a special romantic importance and both wear blue and have blue hair. It can hardly be a coincidence!

Utena is the next iteration of the ideas found in Versailles: a strong willed young woman takes on a role that is seen as masculine by acting chivalrously, wearing military uniforms, and fighting with a sword; also there is an opulent aristocratic stage set for the show.

Shuumatsu no Izetta

The role of the supernatural in World War II in Europe is what binds these two titles. Other than that they are fairly dissimilar but it's a fairly rare theme in anime for it to be relevant.
