This series is visually stunning and its story is compelling but it is held back by a weirdly rushed editing style. Everything from the animations to the dialogue are given so little time to leave an impact on the viewer. Watching this anime you'd think that the footage was sped up, but it's not. This issue gets worse especially during fight scenes where the camera is zooming around so fast it's hard to keep track of what is happening on screen. The story sequences are less fast but the dialogue is still cut so closely together that I found it difficult to understand what was ... going on at times. It's unfortunate because there are some good jokes here and there but they are given no time to land, because the characters are speaking again 1 second later.

Going into watching this series I knew it would be a mild BL action series along the lines of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, so no surprises there. I have to say, I'd probably enjoy this series as much as I enjoyed Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation if only the editing wasn't so jarring.

This series is worth checking out but it might turn you off due to the pacing.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this online yet, but: Based on the events of the manga (and its very short almost-NSFW precursor, “Escalate”), there is some room to interpret the lizard character as a trans man/transmasculine person. It’s nearly impossible to find a Boy’s Love manga with a trans male lead, so it was a pleasant surprise.

This is important to mention because there is a depiction of sexual assault that is coded as transphobia in this manga. There’s no graphic sexual imagery, but I definitely still struggled with the scene in question. There’s also ... some bullying and an additional instance of sexual assault. As such, it may be a difficult read.

Despite the challenging content, I would definitely want to see more of these characters if Nagabe ever decided to revisit this oneshot series. The artstyle is really appealing and I thought the story was charming and heartwarming. Give this one a try, just be careful about the subject matter.
