Whether you are religious or not, you have at least wondered what is there after death at some point. Angel Beats is an anime set in that world after death, it is one of the few anime with only 13 episodes but a large number of genres, action, supernatural, drama, music, romance and comedy. I first started watching this anime because of its eye-catching visual and unique combination of genres. Though the anime might have many flaws, it still tugs on my heart strings and became one of my favourite series.
Story: 8/10
The creator of this series and other series like Kanon and CLANNAD, Jun Maeda, never fails
...
to disappoint me by writing such stories that starts off as a normal high school comedy and progresses into a heart-touching drama that move the hearts of many. Angel Beats has a brilliantly written story depicting the unfair and unjust lives the characters have and show how the characters begins to accept it as their lives and move on. I also really enjoyed the nice smooth shift from funny scenes to action scenes and finally dramatic tear-jerking scenes. However, I was really disappointed on the length of the series. The whole series lasts only for 13 episodes and each arc takes up like 2 to 3 episodes. Although the story did reach a satisfying conclusion, it did not have enough episodes for further explanations of some things in the anime, like the other characters' past or how some things got into the afterlife . If the anime has enough episodes to give some further explanations on certain arcs and answers to some of the unsolved question, it would definitely be a masterpiece.
Art: 8/10
I was initially drawn to this anime by it's breath taking art in some scenes. However, as I continued watching the series, I found out that in some scenes when the focus was not on a particular character, the lines and details got simpler. Then again, the art wasn't THAT bad, but it wasn't perfect either.Certain scenes were done better than others like scenes of the signature Key's "floating orbs of light" during the musical performances were great and the character designs were done quite well, nothing less expected from Na-Ga.
Sound: 10/10
The soundtracks were made by ANANT-GARDE EYES, a soundtrack unit that makes awesome soundtracks from some of Key's work. The combination and arrangement of soundtracks were done so perfectly with cheerful tracks during normal and funny scenes, dramatic tracks during fighting scenes and really heart touching music during the sad and dramatic scenes. The opening and endings of the series were also done very well by Lia and Tada Aoi, not to mention the insert songs by one of my personal favourite artists, LiSA.
The opening sets the mood for the episode, giving it a certain drama feel before the episode starts. The ending song usually cuts in during the last scene of the episode giving it a sad but satisfying feel and making you wanting to watch more.
Characters: 7/10
This is the weakest point of Angel Beats, due to its short length and not having time to have good character developments and arcs. Most people claim that the story has too many stereotypical and cliche characters but I think that this is due to the fact that the characters did not have time to be developed and only a few characters had their arcs done.
Otonashi Yuzuru: 6.5/10
This main leads lacks some personality, although he is the most wisest among the bunch of other guys. He lacks character development and is quite similar to the main leads of most visual novels (considering Jun Maeda is more used to writing VNs). However, it is due to his "VN main lead" personality, that the story progresses.
Nakamura Yuri: 8/10
Apart from the fact that she is a striking resemblance to a certain some other character from some other series *cough* Haruhi *cough*, I actually think she had the most character development. From a god-hating/rebelling girl to a girl who eventually accepts her life and takes pride in it. She is definitely my favourite character from the series and has the most change of attitude over the period of the anime.
Tachibana Kanade: 6/10
I don't know why but emotionless kuuderes like her seem really unappealing to me. She shows like almost zero emotions even during the dramatic scenes and makes it impossible to tell how she is feeling with that poker face. She did however receive good amount of character development (since she's the main heroine) which is great but she just isn't the type of character I like.
Hideki Hinata: 7.5/10
This guy isn't just your perverted-best-friend-of-main-lead-character, he is a rather good best-friend character. You can actually see how strong the bond of friendship between him and the main lead. He is funny at times and receives a fair amount of character development.
GDM band members: 8/10
They are a unique bunch of characters with two of them, Yui and Iwasawa having their arc's covered in the anime. They actually have unique traits and nice back stories.
Rest of SSS: 7.5/10
They are the bunch of comedic retards that fool around and gives Angel Beats that comedy feel and help brighten up the anime although none of them received proper character development.
Enjoyment: 10/10
I personally enjoyed this series a lot despite the many flaws and unexplained things. It was one of the first good one season anime I've seen and also one that got me onto watching anime.
Overall: 9/10
Angel Beats is not a masterpiece but has tons of good elements along with a nice, sweet and dramatic storyline by Jun Maeda. This anime is a must watch to all Key fans and fans of drama anime out there, even if you do not enjoy dramatic scenes, you should give it a go, you would never regret watching it. I recommend it to people who are new to anime or people who are unsure they if they should watch it. This is one of the short yet good anime out there and definitely one of my favourites.

This is my first review so it may not be so good XD.
At first glance, Toradora may seem like any normal romance comedy anime. However, it has a combination of slice of life genre, romance and drama, not to mention its unique character personalities. Story: 9 The story starts off with impact, making you want to know more about the characters and how their relationships would develop. Once the story picks up pace, almost all the episode would have that slight cliffhanger and drama feeling at the ending and would make you go "just one more episode" until it ends. Also, the change between slice of ... |
