Dingo (Manga) add
Mixed Feelings
The ol hardboiled private eye male fantasy where protagonist smokes like a chimney, fucks like a champ, punches like a brute, sports coats like Columbo, overcomes drug addictions and is cool as cat in the face of the city's never-ending supply of crooks and inept police force. Paris serves as an awesome background for this manga, with scene-setting panels really capturing the Parisian flair and sprawl. Dingo's heavy eyebrows and goofy grin - pretty cool - the rest of the generic Parisians, especially the look-alike women who just have sex and nothing else - not so cool. Even if there were other memorable character designs, ...

Spoiler
It's funny to read contemporary critics panning this movie for being difficult to get - there's no need for multi-page high school essays or multi-hour YouTube theory videos to enjoy a plot-light, setup-heavy dystopian mood. For something with little plot, it's animation, mood, and characters better excel and this movie achieves most of them. The mix of World War II Europe, HR Giger, and lifeless forested scapes a bleak and desolate world in an alternative timeline where something catastrophic has occurred to the world (maybe ours, maybe not). It's a tone not too dissimilar from other desolate dystopian futures. The animation has moments to shine ...

Beauty and animation are the core of this anime- the animation quality is abundant throughout the entirety of the OVA though extra special moments such as the festival in the second episode or many of the fight scenes in the latter half do standout. The painted backgrounds cannot be praised enough for their variety, gravity, and overall artistic appeal. It feels like half the OVA is panning of the background and that's definitely not a detriment. The character designs are elegant and move with grace during intense scenes. Tiara makes for a magnificent canvas for trying out various poses (greatly helped with her Barbie-like ...

A fantastic action OVA that absolutely needs a sequel or at least needed to last longer. The animation strikes a balance of lanky and beautiful shojo characters with muscular guns and action all set to a rad soundtrack. The opening shoot out is awesome but Marie and her crew get enough character development in so they're not faceless. The casts leans more beauty than sexy and thats for the better so the OVA isn't mired in fan service. The plot is very James Bond but thats not a bad thing as its easy to follow.

There is a want for a final shootout to cap ...

Summer Wars (Anime) add
A showcase animation in animation and heart. The depiction of real life is standard fare but the virtual world of OZ pops with striking avatar designs (at least two of them) and many moving bodies all pasted on a white background. Summer Wars recalls War Games but with a greater emphasis on strength through family. The family is mostly a joy to watch with none of them grating which helps maintain the movie's pace. The scope of the movie starts fairly small befitting the rural setting but quickly blows up to a ridiculous extent which is a bit of a shame because the concept of ...

Hand Maid Mai (Anime) add

The only watchable episode previewed a horny series with humor, an MC easy to cheer for, an intriguing concept of a futuristic organization sending androids into the past to solve seemingly trivial problems of a common person, and the timeless main conflict between the MC and the likely love interest. The OVA's animation isn't mind-blowing but character designs are distinct enough, the facial expressions can be goofy enough to be comedic, and the show does a great job portraying the lifeless eyes of the cyberdolls.

All of this is for naught though as there's only one episode. I wouldn't expect anything life-changing but I would ...

When they first released this anime on Crunchyroll more than a decade ago, I recall being blown away by the animation and character designs of cast and it still does that...for the first several episodes until it appears the budget dried up and obvious long pans, stills, and recycling rear their ugly heads.

The animation quality tanking and money-saving measures is a damn shame because the show works when it's at its horniest - beautiful and painstaking in the nude scenes of the early episodes.

All the usual suspects appear: cat ears, huge milkers, plug suits, food-closeups, cig-smoking scientist, fast-food chomping American, gun porn, glamours car ...

Turn to the '73 anime if you can find it - The '73 manga has stuff to offer - jokes that land, an iconic drawing style, incredible character expressions and designs, sexy curves, some cool vehicles, vicious action, and a mostly break-neck storytelling pace. This iteration also features plenty of jokes and propaganda-y portrayals that don't age well, an inconsistent tone - sometimes brutal, other times irritatingly non-sensical, and startling lack of empathy to and among the characters.

The main character naturally gets the most love - the humor, the eye candy, the visual appeal, the plot and humanity (barely) all stem from and center ...
