Man, I *really* wanted to like this anime, with the unique (generally) really likable characters and voices, their silly relationships and conversations, neat OST (although some parts were used quite often) and the progress between the main pair despite their misunderstandings, but then it ended up going nowhere. It could've at least been a slow burn path with enjoyment in between to a romantic end, or even diving further into that confirmed relationship for a bit (which seems to be very uncommon), but nope, just a slight hint in the final minutes before the end. Plenty of sugar but much more salt, I guess I
...
could put it.
Akemi is great, with an interesting set-up for many unique interactions with pretty much any character in the story (basically none of which occur since all his interactions in the anime are people making him miserable to the end slightly aside from his one-sided date with Sumi), but episode 7 (especially 7) and 10 (and most of 13, the last one) were awful for the possibility of Sumi and Kazama's relationship going anywhere before the anime ended, because they were centered all around Sumi hanging out with other people by herself, and both her and Kazama ending up feeling sad about the fact.
It surprises me that this doesn't have the drama genre attached with so many love triangles (or love right-angles? lambdas?) Poor guy Akemi got no closure, last seen dying under a pile of dirty locker room clothes, abandoned by the main girls who never figured out who the "other Akemi" was. At least Aoi (who was introduced properly much later than he was) got some closure once she accepted the nature of Sumi and Kazama's relationship, as well as continuing her dream of writing. pain.
Episode 5, 11, and 12 were nice because they centered around the Girl's Club just hanging out and being goofy. Though that may sound pointless, building relationships is sort of the point of a romance story, isn't it? Plus, a greater display of a fun character's personality shines then. Episode 12 is fun times and all, until you realize theres only 1 episode left for anything between Sumi and Kazama to occur, which was pretty much doomed to disappoint at this point as not much has directly happened.
A hopeful, fun, often rough and emotional ride all surrounding the two's building relationship only for nothing to happen. Perhaps I'm looking at it too negatively, and should see it as leaving the ending up to clear interpretation, but the amount of obstacles in between makes me think there should be some sort of a payoff for going through all of that.
(gonna read the manga and hope it ends well, might add more later)
