What is romance? Part of it is mystery and anticipation. I feel like Ane Naru Mono perfectly executes these two elements. In addition, it makes an already (I believe) worn out, overused category of anime new and interesting without any relatively new themes. I made this short review completely spolier free, as it only analyzes themes and aspects of the manga!
Well for starters, Ane Naru Mono perfectly blends its art style with the atmosphere of the story. Each stroke and line is handled with care and dignity. The atmosphere is usually calm but its minor tone changes are handled perfectly with difference in artistic touch.
...
In addition, the slow build and mystery on the underlining characters are handled perfectly. Every chapter, you can see how their relationship develops and every time more and more of their back story is revealed. Although there is a lot of cliches and a lot a lot of fan service, they don't interfere with the development of the story. In fact, often are used a stepping stones for later development. If you are a reader who wants good art, a new interesting romance, or a slow build, with a common pre-text of anime tropes in your next read, you should give Ane Naru Mono a try!

“Liar. Anyone will do”,”Man cannot erase this sadness, because all men are fundamentally alone.”
Neon Gensis Evangelion was a hit. One of the few classics before the 2000s to still survive the test of time. As one of my favorite animes of all time, it leads to an amazing finish. It transformed anime as we know it and set a precedent to what the medium can achieve. Neon gensis is not flawless, but no anime is. What NGE did was use its flaws to its advantage, to create one of the best psychoanalysis films to have ever existed.

Review(Spoiler free!):
As for the technical aspects, NGE does not exactly have the best art or sound. However, the limited art and sound was used very efficiently to carry out its themes. Both the art and soundtracks build the story effectively using very limited motion and sometimes banal music. But this is not a necessity, as psychoanalysis of depression and execrable human behavior is the main premise. (To an extent escapism, if you happen to watch rebuild, you would know escapism was the main premise for the rebuild series, not as much for the original). All the characters are so flawed, from their background to their actions. Yet we still connect to them because it's almost a reflection of ourselves. Shinji is probably the worst of the bunch, probably also the least. But understand what he does is almost courageous and exceptional considering the circumstances. Understand hating him is almost the same as hating yourself. (Although he’s very unlikable). NGE is closer to reality than most animes, even given its highly fictional premise. It shows the end of the world is just horrible, that the end will come anyways.
Eva’s story comes short. But again, it doesn’t matter. It ended with its goals accomplished. Most of it is symbolic, a metaphor. Most of Eva is pretty open ended, which often leads to confusion. But like other shows like flcl, it was not meant to be understood. Eva is the sole embodiment of healing from one self, “Your all you have and you never even learned to help yourself”. I highly recommend this anime.

This is a spoiler-free review, score based on the execution of the themes.
The main issue with a short is establishing a well written, well structured story without using shortcuts. People have pointed out that Shelter uses some of these shortcuts, but Shelter is a masterpiece for a different reason. Shelter would fail as a well written story, the reason for its beauty is from its ability to create a universal theme,
...
a message for a profound and lasting impact, and a high rewatch value in just 6 minutes. Therefore, it would not be good as a full animated series, the short is what allows it to thrive.
Getting the weaknesses of Shelter out of the way, it struggles in two ways: the characters and story. Character development happens very little, and the characters are also pretty banal. The story has way too many holes and the ”shortcuts“ used on both the story and characters creates a complete mess for an full series. However, I actually don’t mind this simply because it doesn’t effect the enjoyment and execution of themes. As a short, these things aren’t important for a more profound and lasting impact.
That being said, reasons for Shelter being a 10:
Universal theme, you could argue there are two. Or at least two main ones. This one is really up for interpretation and also depends on when and how you watch Shelter. The message is also the same, being up for interpretation. But this all leads up to one real major thing: rewatch value.
Creating a high rewatch value is hard. After you watch something once, knowing whats already happens usually means you seen all you’ll see. But Shelter is just the opposite, I think I watched this at least 30 times(I know sad) but I still see something new every time. The themes and messages always seem to blend to your circumstances and situation. It makes it universal. The amount of detail that went into the art(which is fantastic by the way) makes you notice new things everything you watch it. The music fits with the music video and also helps build on the basic how of the story.
Shelter is just a 6-minute video. I highly recommend it and hopefully you’ll like it as much as I did.
