It was good and interesting, until it wasn't.

It felt like Miyazaki just introduced a bunch of cool interesting concepts, and then just said F it at the end and just ended up deleting everything.

I dont know if this movie was just one huge metaphor, but I certainly didn't get it.

Theres just so many unanswered questions, it seems like Miyazaki just wanted to focus on real life symbolisms without caring about the actual movie plot at all.

... It's a waste of a good character, Mahito was a great main character, he's kind but also has a keen mind.
He literally never made any dumb choices.

"Oh? A mysterious bird doing suspicious things and trying to lure me somewhere while mumbling thoughts about my dead mother? Lemme just smack the crap out of it and try to bow and arrow his ass."

"A golden gate that says you'll die in you enter? Well im certainly not gonna just open it willy nilly."

"Natsuko-san says she hates me when shes treated me with nothing but kindness before? She probably doesn't mean it and is just trying to keep me safe."

And then when he deduced the lady's identity, when he said her name was Kiriko it instantly occured to me that this lady IS the granny. Smart boy.

His kindness to bury the pelican was also very touching to see.

The concept of the Warawaras was interesting, how they're basically the souls of babies pre-birth.
But nothing is really done with it, I thought they were gonna connect this concept with Natsuko's unborn child, but nothing.

All the grannies being some kind of spiritual protectors for Mahito seemed something was gonna happen there, but they all didn't really do anything. Are all the grannies residents of this underworld? Cause we know Kiriko was never from the surface since she asked Mahito how it is up there.
And how did granny Kiriko not know anything about what was going on? She just lost her memories of where SHE LITERALLY CAME FROM?

So many questions, zero answers.

And the ending was a rushed mess. Literally everything was wrapped up in like 3mins with no real outcome. The world was basically destroyed because of the parakeet king and yet everything is hunky dory?
Natsuko was just suddenly able to leave when shes the one who wanted to stay?
The pelicans becoming free was nice, but the parakeets too? When they literally tried to eat any humans they could get their hands on?
Then it timeskips to say he's moving back to Tokyo and then just ends. Like wtf??

I was honestly really enjoying this until the last bit of the movie.

Stunning animation and good characters dont really matter when the plot is an absolute gongshow.

If you want to make a movie with symbolism thats fine, but don't make vague symbolisms into a movie if you're not even gonna focus on the movie plot itself.

A lot of people havent enjoyed this anime, the score is honesty much lower then I think it should be. People have their own reasons for not liking it, but if I had to say what one big reason for why people didnt like it, it would be the DAMN CENSORSHIP OVERLOAD.

I actually started watching this series when it aired, I watched the first episode then immediately gave it a 4 and dropped it.
Why?
Because the censorship was so ridiculous I couldnt take this anime seriously, the censors ruin any mood that is built up.
But then the uncensored version was released, and so I gave it ... another try and was not disappointed.

Story: 6
Its fine, protagonist protects girl from baddies. Honestly not much, pretty generic but done right.

Art: 7
The characters look good, the backrounds are solid, but nothing overly eye popping. Except for, you know, "Those" scenes. Animation in "those" scenes very smooth. The fight animations are well, what you would expect, theres nothing top notch but still good.

Sound: 8
The OP and ED are okay, nothing special, after seeing it once I would then proceed to skip them in other episodes.
The ost however, fits the mood in whatever is happening.
A silly scene, a catchy upbeat theme.
An intense scene, a badass serious theme
Here we go, the VA's are top notch.
Mio's squeals are refreshing, its not the usual "Kyaa" it actually sounds like a woman screaming.
Basara's voice definitely fits, a nice manly voice which changes to the situation. I know his VA as characters who are silly, so it was surprising how well it fit in the serious scenes.
Another I would like to mention is Takigawa's voice, his VA I never would think would suit him but I was wrong as he thoroughly pulled it off. I underestimated his abilities as he did a beautiful job doing him.

Character: 7
Basara is a great harem protagonist. When compared to others such as Rito (To-Love-Ru) or Issei (High School DxD), this guys in a league of his own.
He acts just as a normal man would when a hot chick comes on to him.
He has self control but also a realistic breaking point.
And one great thing about him is he's not one of those characters who would defeat a really trashy enemy and not kill him. Like "Oh yeah, im not gonna kill you so you can come back and cause more trouble that could potentially harm someone important to me"
Basara gets stuff done.

Im not going to review all the girls but I will say that none of them are unlikable.
Usually in a harem, there will always be one girl that annoys the hell out of me, but not here. Every girl here is great in her own way.

Enjoyment: 8
I enjoyed it a lot. To the action packed scenes to their daily lives theres not a dull moment. The last episode didnt end badly either like some other series im thinking of.

Overall: 8

DONT WATCH IT CENSORED.
IT WILL RUIN IT.
