Kyoto Animation has done an excellent job on these 2 works, side-stories of the different series, to tell a complete story that stands on its own, and that address with brilliance very similar themes. In a melancholic and sometimes even emotional atmosphere, Tomoya Okazaki and Nozomi Kasaki must both become aware that their attachment/love for a person (Mizore/Tomoyo) can sometimes prevent this talented person from taking off according to their skills. Even if the approach is different, the quay-perfect realization of Kyoto Animation with an impressive attention to detail, especially in the visuals, give a rather similar spirit to the 2 works.

This one seems obvious, with the 2 best isekai that are very similar both in their level of quality and in the themes addressed. Both protagonists arrive in a new fantasy world with 0 knowledge or special advantages, set off on a great, exciting but also terrifying and sometimes painful adventure of redemption. At the beginning, both expect the normal tropes of isekai, but reality catches up with them quickly and violently. Overall, it is a learning about oneself, to recognize one's faults and qualities, to evolve and learn to love oneself. On top of that, the worldbuilding is excellent, the OST is great, the characters are all fantastic, in short it's masterpieces

Behind the cute artistic style, whether it's with the abyss of MiA or the universe of Kaiba, we discover a violent, dark, disturbing reality, which allows to explore mature and human themes. With beautiful visuals and a breathtaking soundtrack, the 2 series make us think about ourselves and our society, through a unique storytelling that immerses us in their universe, alongside complex and human characters. We find in both the atmosphere of a world so big where we find ourselves so tiny and alone, the worldbuilding is fantastic and the anime is very emotional at times.

It may seem strange at first to link these 2 anime, given the difference in visual style and the fact that Re:Zero is an isekai, but both are surprisingly rather similar in the way they present their themes, besides being both masterpieces. At the beginning they look like rather classical anime, before they give you a fist in the face with cruelty. The universe is unknown and frightening but nevertheless captivating and beautiful, the characters are complex, human, with their fears, doubts and desires, and in spite of all the suffering they endure, we can't help but continue to watch them and wish them the best, because the worldbuilding and the storytelling is magnificent. The musics are stunning, without counting the participation of MYTH & ROID in the 2 animes, the visuals are great, in short it's quality and I highly recommend both of them.

Josee to Tora to Sakana-tachi

Understanding others is often difficult. And it is even more difficult when the other person has something different, like a handicap, that sets him or her apart from the others. Misunderstanding turns into fear, fear into hate, and hate into rejection. In these films, we learn to understand and love others, despite their differences. Both represent the difficulties of a girl with a disability, and how they manage to overcome them. It is a story of love and compassion, and although Josee is more focused on romance where A Silent Voice takes a darker tone, the two have a lot of similarities, both in the themes and in the execution of the story. And on top of all that, both are of extremely high quality with stunning visuals and music.

On the surface, both shows look like a regular CGDCT anime like any other. But in reality, Sound! Euphonium and A Place Further than the Universe are coming-of-age life-changing stories about overcoming our fears of failure or embarrassment and just doing what we always wanted to do and love, to prove to the world, but most importantly to ourself, that it's possible. There is no fantasy element, no real romance, just a beautiful and yet terrifying adventure of growing up and overcoming our own personal struggles while trying to achieve what we thought was impossible.

LGBTQI+ representation in anime is rarely done correctly, which is a shame given the impact that discrimination has on our daily lives. Fortunately, Bloom Into You and Wandering Son exist, one dealing with lesbianism and aromanticism/assexuality, and the other with transgenderism, with stories that are as beautiful as they can be almost painful to watch at times due to their realism. These animes question us on our human identity, through slice of life/drama/romance, and a pacing that takes its time to build correctly its characters and its story.

What does "I love you" mean? We often see manga and anime portray love as something magical that suddenly appears, as the best feeling ever, but for some of us it's really hard to understand what it really means. Violet Evergarden and Bloom into You take a completely different approach to this issue, in a different style. While Violet struggles with human emotions in general, Yuu Koito is on the aromantic spectrum, but both are character-driven stories with drama and touching scenes that stick in your head long after the series ends. The character development is excellent, and even though the synopsis is completely different, I highly recommend them both.

Learning empathy, questioning what is "human nature", and learning life-changing lessons through anime. Decim and Violet are very similar characters, because at first they don't act like humans, show no emotion, and through short but amazing stories, they grow as a character to understand that people don't act badly because it's inherent in their nature, but because of their environment and history. They learn empathy and humanity, along with us, and through beautiful sounds and visuals, we can connect with them, and also learn from them. Both series are touching, very moving, and deeply human, and they deserve more love, so go watch them.

When fight scenes are more beautiful in a slice of life moe comedy than most shonen, you know you are watching a great show. Created by the same studio Kyoto Animation, Kyoukai no Kanata and Chuunibyou have the same spirit, with many similarities. Both are character-driven stories about a cute high school girl not being "normal", having an emotional backstory, and overcoming it with the help of the male protagonist, to eventually develop a romance. In fact, we can say that Mirai Kuriyama really live what Rikka Takanashi imagines with her chuunibyou, and both characters are beautifully written.

CGI in anime is rarely well received, but animation studio Orange has proven that a fully CGI anime can be great, with stunning visuals that make the whole experience even better. But CGI isn't the only similarity between these two incredible series. Both are character-driven stories, with drama, non-human characters acting and being more human than in most anime. Both protagonists are faced with self-hatred and the difficulty of changing as a person. I can't promise you will like these series as much as I did, but at least give them a try, they are definitely worth watching, even if you think you don't like CGI or psychological dramas.

While Sound! Euphonium is more serious and drama-driven, and is dealing with deeper themes, K-On! has more comedy, but both are character driven stories about high school moe girls doing what they love and enjoying their high school years even if those club activities will no longer be relevant when they graduate. Kyoto Animation did an incredible job on both series, both are near perfect masterpieces in there own right and while Sound! Euphonium impacted me on a deep personal level and changed my life, K-On! is without a doubt the most enjoyable show I've had the pleasure to experience.

After making us laugh, smile and cry on the masterpiece that was K-On!, Naoko Yamada directed another amazing CGDCT with Kyoto Animation, Tamako Market. With the same pleasant aesthetic, both series are slice-of-life comedies about the normal daily life of cute moe girls. They have the same spirit, with the same relaxing and optimistic vision, which makes them so pleasant to watch. And with their sequel, they make us feel their characters' doubts about their feelings and the future, the fear that it will eventually change with time. Both of these series are incredible and deserve more love

If I had to chose two animes in order to represent the CGDCT genre, it would be these two. With all the new CGDCT animes without any substance, it's sometimes hard to enjoy seeing cute girl doing nothing, but these two stand out from the rest, with great characters, nice visuals, jokes that are really funny, and sometimes more nuanced and emotional moments. K-On! is about the normal daily life of high school moe girls, while in New Game! we follow Aoba's story at at Eagle Jump, the company responsible for making her favorite video game, right after she graduates. If you had to watch only two series in the CGDCT genre to know if it's your cup of tea, just watch those two.
