Serial Experiments Lain is one of the most confusing and mesmerizing animes that i've ever seen. Not many animes that i know of can have a certain feeling on me like one did. It's message of existentialism and our own consumption of the internet has aged quite well. Can't really say the same for the computers they used in the show since this came out in 1998 of course. The plot seems forward enough if you've seen any synopsis of it on a site like Wikipedia or AnimeNewsNetwork, but each episode can have you wondering what it all means and what the show represents. You

can't really recommend this to somebody who's new to the anime medium unless they enjoy a 13 episode rollercoaster of psychological goodness.
Now as for the art style, it's alright. Lain doesn't look like some of the more "flashier" or "moe" animes that were released at the time and uses bleak or plain colors to help set the tone for the show's cryptic atmosphere. The show's main protagonist Lain Iwakura isn't so much of an "extrovert" and lacks any friends besides Alice and her little group of friends who try to get Lain to be more social. As the show progresses, you can feel sympathetic with her struggles of figuring out her existence along with how much it isolates Lain into her association with "The Wired". Serial Experiments Lain pulls you into this confusing but interesting world of existentialism, agents, rumors, and many more. If you're looking for something that can be as psychological as any other anime that somewhat fits this criteria, i highly recommend you give this show a chance.
(P.S: The theme song is definitely something you should NEVER skip. Trust me.)
