Fune wo Amu was one of the few anime of the past season that seemed interesting, it had a lot of potential to be a very good story, but sadly that's not how it resulted
Characters
The characters were fine, nothing outstanding, but pretty decent. They had at least a bit of characterization and personality. For example, Majime was a shy, calm and very inexperienced person, and Nishioka an extrovert and energetic one.
My problem with the characters is the fact that they could have been developed way better, Majime never changes throughout the series, even after the time-skip he doesn't even change a bit and he
...
had a strong potential for character development.
Plot
The plot was decent too, it had some notorious problems, but nothing more.
The biggest problem of the series was the time-skip they did in the middle of anime, the relationship between Majime and Kaguya had to progress slowly and with enough time to see it flow, but they rushed everything and present them to the viewer 13 years after already married and everything.
The strongest part of the series was the message it give to the audience at the end, the fact that achieving one's goals is not easy and one must always work hard for them. Even if the time-skip was a problem, the series did manage to reflect how hard the characters worked for that goal.
Art
Speaking about the art, the character design was made by Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and it was perfect for the series, characters with very thin features were according to the series tone and genre, which is a calm slice of life anime.
Sound
Here there's nothing much to add, the voice actors were fine, they portrayed the character's emotions and personality well.
Regarding the music, the background music was nothing outstanding and the opening theme was too energitic for the series, but the ending one, was perfect for the calm atmosphere the series wanted to show.
Overall
Even if Fune wo Amu had problem like the time-skip in the middle of the series and the lack of character development, it managed to show a very good message for the audience, a well characterized cast, an art style according to the series atmosphere and a decent music and voice acting.
I don't consider it good, but it was a fine series, which I recommend especially to any slice of life fan.
