So I guess this is going to be my first review :)
The first animes that I watched were Dragonball Z, Pokemon, Rurouni Kenshin, Power Stone etc. etc. But it was only recently that I started watching animes seriously. For some reason Berserk was what I started off with and what egged me to keep on watching more animes.
At first it failed to impress me. I found it to be no modern day visual feast and was about to stop. But just for the sake of getting to know a little bit of the story, I persevered for a few more episodes and voila! It was
...
not until the entire 25 episodes were over that I realised Berserk had captured me in its grasp, held me entralled till I witnessed the entire tale.
The story is well....obviously the summary says all you need to know but yes it is amazing and has few shortcomings.
Music? Now usually I find that any music which suits the atmosphere of the moment is pretty much okay with me. But in Berserk the music not only suits the moments but enhances them. To top it off the OP and ED are both glorious to the point that no other anime has been able to accomplish or so I feel.
Guts, Griffith and Casca make up the trio of outsdanding main characters. Guts as the mostly quiet and enraged swordsman. Griffith as the calm and calculating leader of the Band of the Hawks and Casca a female warrior who is close to both Guts and Griffith. Throughout the episodes all of them undergo deep development in their mentality and become closer to each other. The complex relations between each other and the bonds they develop are not somthing which can be explained in few lines so I'll leave it at that.
Being an adaptaton from the manga, comparison is inevitable and of course the manga is much better. But the anime manages to capture just a tiny part of this epic tale within 25 episodes magnificently. Many people may have been disappointed with the ending and certainly it screams out for a sequel but then again nothing is perfect.
In every category Berserk deserves a 10 except maybe art but that is easliy blotched out by everything else which is above par. I wasn't able to find the subbed version but the dubs are actually awesome and I should say, fitting. Berserk deals with concepts such as courage, decision making and most of all dreams and to what lengths the characters go to achieve them. There is voilence, gore, romance, supernatural elements, not something I would recommend to anyone under 17 or 18.
Berserk will grip you in a vice, implore you to view it until you've seen it all, submerge you in the medieval era. At the end of it all, it will awaken emotions and feelings within you which you took for granted or ignored. If not the zenith this certainly is one of the best Japanese animes in the past 20 years and perhaps of all time. This is definitely my favourite anime. A blazing flame in the darkness, Bersek will not disappoint.
