As someone who loves to listen to a lot of pop punk, punk rock, and basically just rock in general, the idea of an anime with a rock band storyline excited me. Did it live up to the excitement? Let's see in the review..
Plot: The plot is eccentric if you'd ask me. It started out as a normal slice of life kind of story with our main character Koyuki being the typical "started out as a good for nothing guy ending up being awesome". But then it added sub-plots such as the story of Lucille, pretty weird because those sort of things happen in rap

music. (Beck have rap rock songs but you know what I'm talking about
I loved it though, it helped the development of characters such as Ryusuke. To summarize it up, the story is very good concerning on the pace and it's originality. It didn't have any plot holes, every scene looked very realistic.
I also loved the relationships Koyuki had with the women in this anime. It made me giggle a lot. :)
Art: I thought this was the best aspect of the show. The art drew me in. It had the perfect for the atmosphere this anime has. It has that rustic, gritty and grungy feel to it. I LOVE IT TO BITS AND PIECES. It goes so well with the show! I know it had repeated animations sometimes but I never really cared because it isn't really worth criticizing.
Sound: To be honest at first I wasn't really into the music this anime offers. Especially the grammar! But to be fair, they're Japanese and they're terribad in English, and picking up an English-speaking VA isn't a good idea cause it won't sound good at all. It grew on me as the episodes passed through though. I liked Face and Brainstorm the most, even if they also had grammar mistakes but I could care less as they were enjoyable at best. The opening was catchy but I got tired of it after playing it one too many times, the ending was boss though, sounded like it's something an experienced American band could put out minus the grammatical mistakes. Voice-acting was top-notch too, splendid work from the VAs. I have yet to watch the English dub.
Character: Beck shined brightly at this aspect, Koyuki especially, their rhythm guitarist. Him alone made me love the show, his development was amazing, from being a guy who thought he'd have nothing to do with his life to being a vocalist of an American-touring band, how great could that be? It made me smile like an idiot. But of course, let us not forget the other band members. Ryusuke, the lead guitarist, is a focal point in this series due to his story about Lucille, but not only that, he served as the band leader who happens to be very stubborn at times but that's fine because it's his purpose for the story, he only wants the best for his band so I can't question his actions which are what a normal leader would do. Chiba is their hot-headed, volatile, and perverted rapper, he served mostly as a comic relief and he did well on this job. He had episodes where in he had his dramatic moments, which are realistic too, he acted just how anyone of us would, and I find that great. Saku is their drummer which I think is important to the development of Koyuki, without him Koyuki would probably just have lost his confidence. And if he did, it would mean the downfall of Beck. That's how important he is. Taira, their bassist, was for me the most plain of the characters but I never really expected him to become a dynamic character since he has this composed and decisive attitude but I like him. He's so cool, the way he plays the bass is very entertaining to watch, and he serves as the anchor of the band, he stabilizes it. Maho is Koyuki's main love interest, she's also a very cool character, I love her personality, whenever she makes these unlikely decisions my heart flutters. I just love how Koyuki and Maho click with each other, their chemistry is great. To summarize it up, the character development was great and everything was realistic, in an anime like this, they did a pretty darn good job.
Enjoyment: Well, what can I say, I enjoyed this a lot. I loved the atmosphere, the music, the characters, everything. It was one hell of a ride. I guess my wish would be for it to have another season. One season isn't enough, we haven't even watched the stories of them touring the USA! But I guess I could settle with this, it was still a good anime. The rewatch value is high as the story is entertaining.
Overall: If you're looking for a light-hearted slice-of-life show, this isn't for you. Well, not really, but if the kind of light-hearted like K-On then no. If you're looking for a very realistic, energetic, and entertaining kind of show then Beck is definitely for you. It's set of characters, well thought out story, and it's great atmosphere will hook you in, trust me, you'll love it. ;)

Orange is a great shojo manga. I am definitely enjoying it at the moment, so I would like to give you a simple review of this heartwarming at the same time heartbreaking manga.
Story is a 9. I have read a lot of shojo manga and I think the story of Orange is unique in its own way. A normal girl receives a letter from her 26-year old self, telling about the events that happened between her and the main male protagonist. Asking her younger self to watch over him. Now that's something you don't see everyday. It is truly unique. Art is a 10. I have to ... May 13, 2014
Bakuman. 3rd Season
(Anime)

Bakuman 3 is a great continuation of the series. I enjoyed watching it and I can definitely say that it will be worth your time as well. Here's the review.
Story is a 9. As with the previous season, it hasn't lost it's edge on story telling and pacing. It's easy to follow and easy to understand. My only issues are some arcs are a bit uninteresting and unfulfilling, like the Nanamine arc. Art is 10. Great art as always. Proper visual effects, no awkward animations or anything etc. Pleasing to watch, I should say. ... |
