I have nothing but gratitude for this anime. It has cleared my mind and left it without any doubts as to the reasons why isekai genre has become nothing but pure landfill. Let's take a stroll along this dumpster and I, your guide, will point out the components to this carefully crafted heap of waste.
First, you'll notice the stale and one dimensional protagonist. This character is more bland than an English breakfast and you will not see any development from him. To anybody who is not a dunce, the slimes are obviously only there to hit the "cuteness" or "adorableness" factor and bait the low
...
expectation viewers. Just like how pokemon always releases a pikachu clone so they can keep selling plushies, this anime dropped these slimes so there was at least one likable aspect of the show for a bottom feeding viewer to latch onto.
Next, we'll be passing by the equally bland worldbuilding. Its monotony and generic landscape and design is nothing but apt for a dump site. Creature designs are not creative, the side characters are true NPCs (boring quest givers that you don't care about), the magic scene is not explained, and the landscape lacks depth that even the windows xp desktop background achieves.
Afterwards, we'll be seeing the pitiful waste that is the animation. You cannot help but weep when you think of how animators were exploited at dirt cheap pay and high hours, toiling to create the only thing that should be considered an insult to artistry. Still frames that last for way too long, copy and pasted scenes (no joke, they literally copy and paste animations back to back), characters whose facial features are speedrunning puberty%.
Try not to breathe too much when we pass the audio. You might think there's nothing there with how monotonous and how characters sound like they've been built to be as uninteresting as possible, but lots of toxic gasses are odorless. The good thing about generic sound effects is that they're easy to drown out and ignore, which is the only thing they're good for.
Taking a look back, you can see how carefully this layered landfill cake has been carefully arranged to set the stage for an anime that has zero stake plots, mindless isekai power spam, and negligible worldbuilding. Efficiency above all else, this anime spews trash in the form of audiovisual media with at least effort as it can, leaving you with nothing but a sense of defeat having been suckered into watching twelve episodes of trash decompose. I am glad I started skipping dialogue (highly recommended). I wish I skipped watching this altogether (most recommended).
The only thing this anime is missing to make it the epitome and paradigm for "everything wrong with isekai" are overly busty generic anime girls and both legally and morally questionably young female companions to sexualize. Without these critical anime trope components, I'm afraid the anime will lack appeal to many weebs and anime consumers that at best are described as subhuman.
Therefore, Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life falls short of being a 1/10. Oof, so close!

I am not a medical professional. If I was, I probably would not be watching anime and instead find solace in knowing even though my life also sucks at least I'm making more money than the average anime fan. However one can rejoice, as this is the rare isekai where the protagonist is actually competent. As a TL;DR, I would say this show from the bunch of isekai dumped on us every season is worth taking a look at. Contrary to what we've seen in other isekais, magic is only an auxiliary to the main character's knowledge and skills rather than the plot mechanism that
...
turns an ordinary dude into an ordinary dude with cheat powers. I rate it a 7 as I'm remaining cautiously optimistic about the direction this show will go towards (isekai are grandmasters at fumbling the storytelling). Furthermore, the premise is that an old dude turns into a kid and shows off his knowledge to the uneducated clowns that is medieval humans, impressing everyone and becoming jailbait for their bombshell babe mentor, who is awed at the size of MC's cranium. If I didn't mention pharmacy, nobody would know which series I was describing.
The main character is a gigachad STEMlord who, due to anime logic, pretty much has all of PubMed and ChEMBL installed on his brain like it was your 10TB hard disk of JAVs. Oftentimes it ends up taking away some entertainment value from the show because it saves the MC from overcoming struggle. The problems (illnesses, in this case) are presented to the MC clearly and immediately like a football game streaker. Then the MC just goes "hmmmm... okay since I diagnosed you with cringe I already know you need N-methyl-1-phenylpropan-2-amine and since I have magic boom it's instantly made for the patient". The actual struggle the MC is facing is breaking out of his timid shell and catching up with the new society's common sense (sound familiar?) Even though it's entertaining to see him wow the viewer with his knowledge on the molecular structure of tylenol, I can see it getting lost with viewers who aren't premed or bio/chem majors going "haha wow my favorite polymer structure made it into anime!" To give the show credit, it does a good job of using technical jargon with moderation. I'm putting this show on blast for the sake of being critical, but if you enjoy seeing an isekai character who earns their accomplishments via merit, I would still consider this an enjoyable watch if you're the type who can overlook some details.
A disclaimer I will add is that viewers hoping for scientific accuracy on the level of something like The Martian will likely be disappointed, as I can imagine that many med viewers or sharp minded individuals will find tons of inconsistencies in the science storytelling. In fact, the general story glosses over significant plot developments such as the estate staff being given medicine or the MC's medical treatment of court nobles. Rather than going "modern medicine good", the show leans towards the end of "old medicine bad" and end up cutting some corners that people will catch on to. I gave this show a 7 due to a mix of recent isekai shows being awful and because there seems to have been effort to incorporate real, scientific accuracy into the world rather than just writing it all off as magic. Even though it is no Chubbyemu video, the MC not being a total deadbeat and the incorporation of scientific tones gives it a good start, unlike some of the other new isekai shows that make you feel like you're eating gas station sushi.

TL;DR -- Last paragraph
There are isekais that are so bad they're good. There are ones that are so bad they amaze you. There are ones that are so bad they make you laugh. This one, however, is so bad that felt apologetic. Let this show be by no means a representation of the source material. I feel like this series is a crime to whoever created the story and my deepest, deepest condolences to the author who lives on knowing that their child was massacred in the most brutal, inhumane method known to man: Millepensee. Come, lets throw those hands in a prayer circle and
...
discuss this war crime that has been forcibly bestowed upon our eyes.
The story is very convoluted, and just the fact that people who've read the source material need to constantly explain the goings on for anime watchers is evidence enough. There is some sort of circus trick going on where the scriptwriters attempted to juggle having storyline be as ambiguous and tricky as possible to plant plot twists, covering as much of the timeline as possible, and throwing in as much source material as possible. You're either lost, stuck in a tidal wave of unnecessary exposition (probably copy-pasted from the LN) or just bored from repetition. These guys are trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole with the paper handle of a screwdriver. This bastardization of a plot leaves you with little to no investment to the world and its characters. Speaking of which...
Watching the characters made me feel like I was watching a murder scene. Apparently, the light novel goes into the backstory of several side characters to explain their situation and how they ended up. This show said screw that and skipped to "present day" as quick as possible. To rub hydrochloric acid into the wound, you are often forcibly ripped away from the main character's storyline to watch the side characters make stupid decisions in their petty arguments, which is nothing short of torture. The only form of enjoyment in this show was watching the main character get OP after spawning in their underdog position, but even then...
This whole show is still torture because the main character herself isn't interesting at all. Her past life as a social outcast is way too much of a contrast to her annoyingly persistent and ignorant happy-go-lucky attitude. The show attempts to describe her as cunning but we are never shown her setups or strategies -- just "she already planned for this, trust me". Her jokes are awful to the point where you don't cringe, rather feel sorry for the voice actor. The MC is proof that no amount of enthusiasm in VA'ing can make up for a dreadful storyline. There never seems to be any stakes involved and you soon learn to throw away any feelings of tension from the fact that nobody treats the situation seriously. Not the main character, and definitely not the script writers.
If I had to summarize the production, it would be [cutting corners]. The whole this is a circle at this point. People say all the camera angles and pans are weird because they were done to avoid animating 2D scenes. The running animations in particular are dreadful. They are a rapid loop of a couple frames which make the characters look like they're spazzing out. Then the CGI. Oh, god, the CGI... Not even the brightest and hottest burning of liquid napalm would compare to the damage done to my visual senses from the CGI. All we can hope is that the war crimes committed by these 3D renders are simply a rite of passage to an eventual glorious future where 3D animation holds a candle to current 2D. Now please excuse me while I huff a long, thick line of cope and cry myself to sleep.
If you thought this review wasn't funny, then don't watch the show. Comedy is subjective, but trust me when I say this show is objectively less funny. It's hard to decide whether it was rushed, low effort, or the priorities for it was heavily misplaced, but the poor production quality will stick out like a sore thumb that's gushing blood like a geyser. You will be hard pressed to grow attached to any character, even the main character, unless you're easily pleased by a cute, ditzy personality. Occasionally the show will throw you a bone to show how OP the MC has gotten, but by then I had already lost interest. This show was the first one that genuinely put me to sleep and also my new record for the fastest I've finished a 24-episode series since it was more interesting to constantly fast forward until actual action happened. Tell, don't show is the motto of this series. The producers owe an apology and their firstborns to the author of the LN. And that's right, I hate watched this entire series and got what I deserved. So what?

3/10 You can probably endure through it, but overall it's a waste of time.
Let's set something straight. Originality is not just mocking a common trope or cliche, but also the ability to disguise it and present it as a work that stands on its own. If you're content with the common female character tropes that have been going along for quite a long time now, then this show will be just fine. If you're looking for some fanservice or cute girls to look at, then this show will be just fine. In my opinion, when this show presented itself as a jab to cookie cutter
...
romcom tropes, it raised my expectations. Unfortunately, my hopes were shattered, swept up, and poured into a dumpster fire that is this Oresuki as I fight the urge to visit my home therapist Clorox for a cleansing of my eyes and ears.
Story (2): Guy in high school tries to "manipulate" his life to set up a typical romcom scenario. Okay, seems cool. However, I've seen kiddie pools with more depth and less shit in them than the writing and dialogue of this show. The thing is though, the main plot of the show isn't really about the protagonist being clever or attempting to make things go his way. It's simply the type of romcom that tries very hard to mock, with your stale perpetual self cock-blocking main character in a powerless situation of a bunch of hollow cookie-cutter girls fighting over him. Imagine a girl becoming attracted to a guy because the guy is a good friend to *others*. Sorry, John Green, but we've got a better tear-jerker than The Fault in Our Stars. This story will make you cry when you realize that a studio decided that this was the one and invested a million or two into airing this show.
Art (6): The saving grace of this show is the artwork. Nothing special, but nothing to be impressed about either. Again, if you're into fanservice then you'll appreciate it much more than I will.
Sound (2): I do not know why but something about the characters' voices get to me. It feels like I'm listening to a kindergarten teacher as it lacks any subtlety or sense of naturalness to it.
Character (1): The protagonist is spineless. The side characters are bland and have the social awareness comparable to the baked potato I had for dinner tonight, difference being the potato actually had flavor to it.
Enjoyment (2): Overall, this show was incredibly difficult to watch. It has no sense of direction other than "basic romcoms haha, amirite?" I would say if you want to watch actual progression in a somewhat realistic scenario, avoid this at all costs.

After watching the first few episodes, I honestly thought this series was amazing. I made the mistake of thinking that this series had self awareness and was satirical. There's no way that an anime like this would be anything but a joke, right? The author herself wrote the source material in part to appease her shota obsession, so this couldn't be taken seriously in any way, right? It's supposed to be a joke on how isekai is getting more and more saturated, right? Now that I've reached episode 10, I'm increasingly convinced that this series was not as satirical as I thought.
Story: 2 The
...
main storyline is improving the relationship between an angsty teen son and what seems to be a sorry excuse for a mother. It is a repeated gag of the mother being OP, stealing the spotlight of her son, and moving on. The worldbuilding is lazy beyond belief. There is no actual plot besides... well, Mamako's "plots". This anime is lost beyond help in deciding whether to be an OP character isekai adventure or a heartfelt story of a son repairing relationships with his mother. I've seen slice of life anime with even more development than this series.
Art: 4 Designs are bland. Animation is incredibly underwhelming. The mother's OP multiattacks are just lazy spike and magic bullet animations pasted over a tacky background effect. I'll give them some acknowledgement on its authenticity though. This anime's attack animations are about as low quality as your average RPG. Overall, it's not bad to the point that it's unwatchable, but there is nothing visually impressive about this anime, except the fact that it contains the first big breasted dragon I've ever seen.
Sound: 4 There is nothing interesting about the soundwork either. The effects are all recycled and cheap. The sound track is nothing special either.
Characters: 2 It's so hard to feel attached to any character. The main character Masato (the son) is pathetic and one dimensional. Mamako (the mother) is so socially and mentally crippled that calling her a mother is a crime against all mothers. The side chicks serve no purpose other than being eyecandy.
Enjoyment: 2 As you might've guessed, this was incredibly difficult to watch. The series doesn't know how to make people laugh, it doesn't know how to make an interesting setup, and it doesn't know how to make a game world with depth. It is a showcase of incompetence or laziness. A part of me hopes that this is just a really well done shitpost series, but I've mostly lost all hope by now.
You shouldn't and won't need to watch this to get the memes. Use your time for something more worthwhile.

Needless to say, Hinamatsuri performs excellently in comedy. It contains a lot of novel humor that isn't recycled from the same gags over and over again, despite having popular tropes such as little girls with superpowers. However, I think it will be redundant to talk about its comedic aspect; you can read the numerous other reviews that talk about that. I want to add another layer to Hinamatsuri that I don't see mentioned very often or extensively. There was obviously a lot of care and passion that went into this anime and it definitely came from more than just wanting to make people laugh.
Hinamatsuri portrays
...
aspects of growing up, learning about the world around you, and finding your place in society in a funny, heartfelt, but ultimately meaningful way. We see girls that are dropped into a new and unforgiving world with no clue of how to support themselves. They tackle different responsibilities and struggle with individual shortcomings that many can't do much about except sympathize, or even pity. However, they interact with adults who drift in the flow of society. They are the ones who have their role and know their place, whether it be a salaryman, yakuza underling, bar owner, or even a homeless person. To that, Hinamatsuri says that there is more to life than gaining achievements or earning a paycheck. It's about leaving a mark on the people around you and being the reason why you worked hard in the first place. And becoming the reason why others will want to work hard in the future.
Hitomi's storyline could be seen as a meaningful message on the growing pile of expectations and responsibilities a young overachiever deals with, but it can also be seen as a critique on how being ahead in society means leaving things behind. Anzu's storyline is a clear nod to the value of personal relationships over money, as well as a touching reminder of everyone's potential to give meaning to each others' lives regardless of their situation. Hina and Nitta's storyline shows that one's flaws make a person just as much as their strengths, but their strengths should not be overcherished nor should their flaws be overcriticized because they are neither permanent nor the deciding factors of a meaningful relationship.
This anime will make you laugh, but I strongly believe that all the emotional parts are there for a reason. Hinamatsuri wants to send a message to those who live their day to day lives, following the flow of society day after day. It is a reminder for those who have forgotten what they are capable of beyond the workplace or school to remember the people whose lives they have changed and the people whose lives they want to change in the future. It shows how in a short time frame it may seem like nothing is changing, but when you look through a greater timespan you will realize that much has changed. It's about how there will always be things to live for, and more importantly others to live for.
It is important to remember that Japanese society has been increasingly workaholic and sedentary. Hinamatsuri beautifully executes two plans for its audience: to make them laugh again and to make them feel like they will have a purpose regardless of where they end up. If anything, watch it for the comedy, but stay for the anime's intention to make you feel cared about.
Story: 9 Simple yet meaningful, although some parts (like Mao) feel a bit out of place
Art: 9 Cute but not distracting. Hilarious effects and great work on ambiance. There was some fanservice in the first bit, but it is not shoved in your face and they tone it down completely moving towards the end. It's probably the norm in Japanese anime for there to be cute girls, etc.
Sound: 10 No complaints here. Dialogue and voice acting done incredibly well and definitely carried the series. Great tracks overall as well.
Character: 10 The character development was the star of this show and it performed beautifully.
Enjoyment: 9 It made me laugh hysterically at times, and tear up in others. My only issue is that that some episodes were so comedic in the first half then so emotional in the second.

(Last paragraph TLDR) Maou-sama Retry is honestly a work of art. It's like an 80 year old borderline insane professor that says "fuck it" whenever he has to show up to lecture, giving the most unimaginably unenthusiastic and bland lecture that would put my dead grandpa to sleep a second time. Well, this anime said "fuck it" and decided to throw out an isekai into the fray. It hurts so much to watch that it's a literal masterpiece of its own type.
Maou-sama has zero expectations for the viewers
Maou-sama does not bother with putting in that extra effort to pander to the viewers
Maou-sama simply doesn't give
...
a damn
It's one of those works that has achieved the legendary status of "so bad it's good".
Story: So far, we see our MC travelling around picking up chicks for his MC harem, with member #1 being a blonde Rem, who he saved upon being transported to the world. "Where's the plot?" you might ask. And my answer to that is
Moving on, the art can be described as your standard below-average animation and design. My tip to maintain immersion is to imagine that characters of the anime have a secret desire to become plastic surgeons and practice face lifts on each other off screen. Why are blonde Rem's legs suddenly so thin? Where are he knees? Will Plankton ever get the Krusty Krab secret formula?
Sound: Okay, all jokes aside, the soundracks of this anime was breathtakingly bad. Mistimed high energy electric guitar music regardless of the tone of the scene? You got it. Shitty flute? Episode 4 has got you covered. Voice acting? I dunno. It's probably a good thing I don't understand Japanese. I feel like the sound production deserves its own spot in the character cast because I find myself more fascinated by it than some of the other characters in the show.
Character: Don't expect too much from the characters. It seems like they weren't designed with the intent for character development, rather to be vessels for gags and laughs. I can appreciate that in of itself though.
Honestly, this is by no means a good anime. The studio did such a shoddy job but it's a good thing the writing from the source material was able to make up for it. Do not go in with high expectations for an amazing product. It clearly does not take itself seriously, but there are definitely funny moments that might genuinely make you laugh. Unfortunately, there are so many other better anime out there that I can't objectively give this a high score. But if I were to talk about enjoyment, I'd give it a 9 for how amazingly bad it was.

How can one read through all these chapters of verbal abuse and not feel sick in their stomach? For those who do - admit that it's a guilty pleasure. I acknowledge that there are people who are into it - being talked down and degraded by an anime 'waifu'. But nobody in their right mind should find it "cute" to see anyone being bullied. Ever.
You do not bully others because you like them. You do not bully people to the point of crying. Takagi-san is a great example of how one can utilize playfulness and proper pranking/teasing. What Nagatoro does is straight up abuse.
...
Nobody in their right mind would pinpoint the deepest insecurities of those they care about and use it for humiliation to the point of making their victim cry - and enjoy it. No decent human would approach someone who is earnestly pursuing their dreams and absolutely degrade all the effort they went through becuase 'it was fun'. Why? Why would anybody say that is okay? Why would the author depict this as an idealistic form of romance?
Obviously the story gets a 1. It made me sick to the stomach. Perhaps I am biased or I "just don't get it". But when I see bullying, especially romanticized and excused in this way, this makes me sick. I kept reading and yes, I know that Nagatoro gets less harsh. But what the story needs needs is for what Nagatoro did to be acknowledged as disgusting. A silent voice made an attempt at this and while it was by no means a perfect portrayal of the potential bullying has on a person's psyche, at least they tried.
Art gets an 8. On a surface level the artwork can be said to be cute too, although it's nothing new. More importantly, I have to acknowledge the ability of the author to somewhat depict the smug and absolute heartlessness of Natagoro and the devastation and insecurity of her victim to the point that I found it hard to continue. Well done.
Character gets a 3. I applaud the author for being able to depict a bully and victim decently. However, interactions between people of those sorts of personalities usually result in much more fucked up outcomes. The start was well done, but you missed on the follow up.
Enjoyment gets a 1. Need I explain more?
1/10
This is definitely my opinion and a bias. I can tell that this is a guilty pleasure type of manga and there might've been many people like me who came in expecting something similar to a Tagaki-san dynamic. Others may have just wanted to see some art or eyecandy. I tried to give this a chance, but I'm just appalled.

TL;DR - This anime is not for your entertainment. If you're watching it to see some badass loli do cool stuff and save the word or something then turn around. You are not the intended audience. Watch this anime and try to understand its take on wartime. Whether you agree or disagree, you should be able to acknowledge the depth of the anime. Once again, if you're coming for an isekai like Konosuba, then you're at the wrong place. There is purpose in the art, sound (and lack thereof), designs, and characters. Overall deserves a 9/10.
I've been reading several reviews and in my opinion most
...
of them see the anime in a horribly surface level with the expectation of entertainment, flashy effects, mind blowing war tactics, or some novel take on the isekai trope. This anime is not about making you go "wow that character is really cool" or "what a great fight scene". It's about war. (duh) Let me explain. If you don't want to read much, just take a look at the next paragraph.
"Here we go again, a reincarnated loli who's technically a middle aged man so legal. C'mon Japan" Sorry to break it to you, but the point of having a loli as the MC is not to appeal to your sick and twisted fantasies. It's clear that she's not to be lewd. Her face is constantly warped, she's always in military garb, and she's literally flat as a board. There is only one or two slightly sexual jokes during the dress scene and a scene where a female soldier falls off a bunk. Do people not get it? It should make the viewer feel disgusted about seeing a little girl sent to war. We are okay with it if it was a middle-aged man. Then women are next? Then adolescent boys? Girls? It was nearing that point in WWI. "I have a daughter that is your age". Some variant of this quote appeared several times throughout the anime. It's a wake up call to how f**cked up war is. It's about how war is a factory for monsters. It's dehumanizing. It's purposeless. It's not about appealing to the isekai fanbase and their "extensive" war knowledge from playing Civ or Diplomacy. Tanya being a pure psychopath is not going to be for everyone. What are you expecting? A "save me onii-chan" imouto character in a show about war? Don't joke around.
Hopefully the above is enough to make you start thinking more critically. That means we can move on to art and sound. The music and especially the lack thereof is well done. Think about how music is used conservatively. Once again, this is about war. There will be no music to comfort you. There will be no music to hype you up for death. The only music played during war is gunshots, explosives, screams, and death. The palette is dark and dreary for a reason, and bright to match mood. They spoiled us with the many action scenes. They rightfully set fanservice to zero. War is supposed to be ugly. Hard to watch. Unpleasing. They do not cut corners on the art; it should be obvious from the animations. They don't want you to fawn over character appearances. Tanya's twisted expressions are a reminder to that. Pink hair's (long name) face is drawn to not be attractive. Of course that won't stop the internet.
I don't want to walk you through everything about this anime. It's a conclusion that you should reach yourself and it will make you enjoy the anime much better. Am I ignoring the stuff about Being X? For this review, yes. But you can find information on the presence of religion in Nazi ideology. This anime can only cover so much and it did well for the 12 episodes it was given.

(Spoiler free) TLDR: If you have high expectations for this anime, this will be a 4/10 for you. If you are just interested in watching it, this will be an amazing journey. 9/10. As someone who cannot handle a story structure littered with plot holes, improbabilities, and throws in more and more factors as an excuse for continuity, this grew unbearable to watch. I had high expectations, and was ultimately disappointed. Acknowledging the great execution at the start of the show, it deserves a 3/10. Since I want to be as objective as possible, I gave it a 7.
As someone who had very high expectations,
...
I can only say that this was disappointing. Coincidences must happen for there to be an interesting story. Fine. However, you cannot use 'coincidence' as an excuse for all the plot holes and improbabilities that led to the forced ending. The basic plot is a very interesting one. However, as the game of cat and mouse progressed, the tower of evidence and deceit that the two opposing forces created had become so flimsy, you expected it to collapse any moment. The conclusions that the characters jump to and the weak suspicions that they hang on to are so absurd that you can practically hear the writer screaming their intent to keep the plot fixated on path that he has already paved for them. The characters are not geniuses; they're wearing plot armor.
The characters grow more and more stale as the anime goes on. How do people change when they can feel death breathing on their necks? Sure, our MC might be a genius, but what about the other officers? How could you throw an ordinary person into sensory deprivation and confinement for almost two months and have them shrug it off like they had a bad day at work? In the last third of the show, new characters are thrown into the clusterf*ck just to serve as pawns to show how 'genius' the stars of the show are. In the end, you don't watch it to see how the characters grow. You watch it just to know the ending.
The art and sound are undeniably well done, nonetheless. As many have also said, the art and sound complement the atmosphere and theme of the anime very well. It was the saving grace of the show.
