A complete void of writing. I cannot state the themes are positive or negative because they don't exist. Rape portrayed as a morally acceptable & good action, treated with the levity of anime shenanigans after the MC had explicitly eaten the character's comrades, the victim then falls in love with him with every other female character that has no other characteristic, which is more character than can be said for the MC. Even ignoring the morality the character consistency & continuity in action to events is simply nonexistent, not to state that there are even any characters to begin with.
Any value to be found is
...
solely in its spectacle, which is also quite lacking by comparison to similar shows. While it had an intriguing premise & one I gave far more opportunity than it deserved, this is perhaps the worse show I have ever seen in animation in terms of writing because it simply doesn't exist. Conflicts are arbitrary, always resolved easily with not a sweat shed or a question to be held, tension is void, character is void beyond "I'm a female OC that likes MC at the drop of a hat even if he literally killed all of my friends & comrades, woah silly anime shenanigans about how we can't do that 'til marriage right after heartlessly slaughtering & eating my allies", theme is nonexistent, progression amounts to bland power levels, characters are empty generic anime shells that have nothing at all to them. This is a powertrip with genuinely nothing else there to even attempt to chew on. Even the spectacle is lacking. MC is equally as void as the rest of the show, he has nothing to him really.
If you are at all intrigued by the premise, don't even bother. If you are interested in powertrip excitement junkfood, watch Overlord instead. That still at least has some qualities of writing.
This is genuinely a worthless, bland, void. I'd rather be watching Chargeman Ken at least the absurdity is enjoyable & it still conceives of the vague concept of themes & character. It has practically no redeeming qualities in writing. I put it at the same tier as Velma, Harley Quinn, the Acolyte.

A rather awful series. I truly do not comprehend how this was upheld as something groundbreaking or how some compared it to the absolute genius of Berserk (manga and 1998 adaptation). It is utterly insane to me someone described it this way or any of it as a masterpiece.
It is void of depth and it does not make you care for really any of the characters. There's no investment. It doesn't sufficiently develop the time and interest and involvement to get characters involved when anything negative happens. If I didn't know any better I would think everyone who declared this a brilliant show was a
...
paid actor.
I had to drop it initially halfway through, I couldn't do it anymore when the show never even attempted to get me to care about something relevant to the main character in Episode 5 and had no impact at all. I will avoid stating the specifics for the sake of spoilers. I then went back attempting to complete it and ended up somewhat skipping to the end out of boredom. I found it utterly ridiculous, terribly built up, lacking in consistency or characterization or development or plot or world building. It fails to develop everything relevant entirely.
The main character's entire character can be summed up by the title. He cries a lot, he's very sad, he has devil powers. At most you get a sudden change when the devilman becomes the devilman in terms of being more confident and uncaring towards how others view him. That's about the furthest it goes. There's no depth to it. It just happens magically. That's how almost all of the events of the series can be described.
The only characters that had any development at all are the rapper side characters. They have an actual story arc in the couple 5 minute segments they show up. There's much more development in them, and it's largely pointless and disconnected to the main story.
Devilman: Crybaby appears to be attempting to be deep, some degree of philosophical, to be smart, when it is utterly shallow, fails to lead, and does not develop any of it. It makes no genuine effort to invest the consumer in terms of character or plot.
Animation quality is... it's smooth but the use of contrast and shading is... I've seen better in an extracurricular graphic design course for university freshmen. For the most part it's nonexistent on characters, and what does exist on very rare occasion is pillowing which is a terrible technique that is specifically taught to be avoided. The linework is usually all uniform which can work with certain stylization but doesn't really here, everything is so flat and boring unless it's a demon with interesting and complex design characteristics. Dolls have more life and interest to them than this, as at least they have shadows and contours. It's worse than any of the generic character designs or weakest anime or poor CGI implementations. It isn't paying homage, even the original 1972 run does this correctly, it just skips an entire step of animation. It's also very inconsistent otherwise with quality of character work in all other aspects.
There is nothing of value here except lessons what not to do and how people can be swept up by something that if analyzed fails narratively, artistically, character, world development, etc.

One of the best slice of life shows ever made, each is its own film really. A love letter to high school and youth with almost every episode having some deeper themes about what it means to be a man, to grow up, and to live. It's lighthearted and laidback for the most part but takes itself seriously. It's not so much a comedy as a pure slice of life, just segments of the lives of these budding adults as they live their final year in high school. Manly guys doing quite manly things yet still being kids.
If you're struggling to find it, Inka-Subs is
...
the one who has done the fan subs of the bluray.
It's a teenage drama that really encapsulates and oozes the 80's, visually it's one of my favorites due to how much it feels like a painting of a 60's diner come to life with 80's stylings. It starts strong and largely only gets better in its visual styling. It's got that incredible use of contrast and color in all of the best ways. It'll punch you with nostalgia, even if you've never had any about the period or never lived through it. It's one of those that really just paints the period so well.
The only episode I can call weak is episode 10, which has some quite painful Engrish in it and is the least developed plot wise.
If you want a very genuine, ernest slice of life, of 18 year old rock-n-rollers and grease monkeys set to 1980's Japan, this is your show.
