Do you enjoy anime? Odds are that you do, if you are on this site and reading this review.
From the producer who brought you Cowboy Bebop, and Samurai Champloo, comes SPACE DANDY (season 2 in this case), and Space Dandy is a platform that both celebrates and lampoons anime topes from every genre, using the vehicle of a group of alien-hunter/discoverers in space.
Literally everything from the double-intro to the theme song, to the narrated intro, to the antagonists (Dr. Geb and his questionably effective planning/execution), to the episodic nature of the Dandy universe makes this a

Elfen Lied
(Anime)
add
Elfen Lied is infamous for how bloody it is, and how much nudity there is. If you like those things, then you will certainly get a kick out of Elfen Lied, but those are not the main components that make this such an epic anime.
Elfen Lied, at its core, is a hugely tragic tale. As often happens in tragedies (especially anime tragedies), the characters are subjected to trial after trial, escalating in intensity and what the characters are put through. What this anime does so perfectly is that it walks that fine line between giving the viewer enough rope to hope that the character will ... Aug 15, 2010
Mezzo rocks. Sure, the animation is nothing new. Sure, the characters are a little bit fanboyish, a little bit stereotypical. But as with so many other anime, the whole is much more than the simple sum of its parts. Even though it is somewhat middle-of-the-road, it still does it to perfection. I found myself wanting much, much more when I finished the final (13th) episode. This seemed, to me, like a series that was in a groove that could have ran for 30 episodes, or 60! Unfortunately it did not, but if you like a fiesty female heroine that kicks ass without dishing out man-hating

Gilgamesh. What to say about this anime that wouldn't do it a disservice? How often do you find plots that blend one of the oldest myths of all time, a futuristic plot, a tragedy, a mildly incestuous brother/sister relationship that is not only noticed but lightly mocked by the other characters? As well as totally denying the viewer any real insight into either the main antagonists, the shadowy scientist that exists behind them, the true origin, or exactly what happens when its all over!
Did that confuse you? It's okay if it did. Rest easy in the knowledge that this anime provides characters that are totally, ... Aug 15, 2010
Afro Samurai: Resurrection
(Anime)
add
The made-for-tv-movie adaptation of the amazing 5-episode miniseries Afro Samurai, Afro Samurai: Ressurection keeps everything that made the original Afro Samurai awesome: Afro, his sidekick, and the most compelling storyline from the first miniseries, and adds some elements that are awesome and appropriate; for one thing, Lucy Liu joins the vocal cast, adding yet another recognizable talent to the mix.
Add to that the fact that the movie makes for a much better vehicle for The RZA's beats (including an amazing parade scene where there is a DJ actually spinning in the scene), and he steps up to the challenge masterfully, laying down even better, tighter, ... Aug 15, 2010
Cowboy Bebop
(Anime)
add
Cowboy Bebop is, amongst my group of peers, THE "introductory" anime series. Blending a middle-of-the-road animation style that is at the same time distinctly Japanese, while utilizing many camera angles and lighting techniques that will be familiar to any Western viewer.
From the bebop-like introduction music to the english vocal actors for the dub (so excellent as to put any non-cartoon watcher at ease) to the main character, Spike to the unique commercial transition scrrens are understandable enough (and more importantly, interesting enough) to make this the perfect bridge into the anime universe. The only thing that I can say as a word of warning is ... |
