Both anime center on a teenage boy who suffers from guilt after a traumatic event in his past and seeks some form of reconciliation and redemption for his actions. Both anime also devote considerable time to that boy's group of childhood friends and how they too have to deal with their own personal demons stemming from that event. Lastly, both anime are very effective tearjerkers.

Both manga are historical fiction/romance set in central Asia a couple hundred years ago. Although, between the two, I'd say Otoyomegatari's breathtakingly beautiful artwork makes it the better series.

Both of these romance series go all-out in their costume design departments, with a ludicrously detailed late Victorian/ Edwardian era aesthetic. If you're a fan of the time period you need to check both of these shows out.

Do you like historical fiction, gorgeous artwork, bone-shattering violence, and philosophical brooding? If yes, then here are your manga.

Both are historical fiction manga with incredibly beautiful, detailed, and well-researched artwork and strong character development. However, they are also radically different works as well. 'Vinland Saga' is brooding, philosophical, and violent- every bit the 'Saga' it claims to be. Meanwhile 'A Bride's Story' is a far more relaxed 'Slice of Life' romance with only occasional visits into more dramatic territory (the difference being that we're getting a slice of life in 19th century Central Asia). Both will be enjoyable to fans of historical fiction who appreciate authors that clearly spent considerable time doing their research. Yukimura Makoto and Mori Kaoru need to have a manga-baby.

Two historical fiction anime set in pre-Revolutionary France. 'Rose' is a swashbuckling adventure/romance while 'D'Eon' is a Gothic horror/mystery. 'Rose' is the superior title, but both will be enjoyable to fans of historical fiction.

These two films are cornerstones of the anime 'canon'. Both have ridiculously high animation quality that can put even modern productions to shame. Coupled with deep themes that stick with you long after the credits roll and presentation that loves to screw with your mind, and you have the two movies that proved to the world Japanese animation could produce works of ART. Calling yourself a serious anime fan if you haven't seen 'Akira' and 'Ghost In The Shell' at least once is like saying you're a devotee of the theater but have never read 'Hamlet' or 'Oedipus Rex'.
