If you enjoy fourth wall breaking you are in for a treat. Both of these series are masterworks that explore the frontiers of metafiction via their heavy use of deconstruction. They feature an abundance of lampshades, satire, social commentary and absurd comedy all together with plot premises so outlandish they will leave an imaginative viewer questioning the metaphysical limits of reality.

Grisaia no Kajitsu

Gosick and the Grisaia series are both centred around an idyllic, isolated setting where romantic undertones flourish. They both feature story arcs that slowly reveal the backstories and intrigue that take place in the outside world, eventually stretching across continents, involving politics & military and ultimately end in a grandiose arc where stakes could not be higher.

Both are absurdist fantasies that carry sophisticated humour and social commentary beneath an innocent surface. Underrated gems for a selective audience.

Domestic na Kanojo

A story about fucked up people, their fucked up relationships, and how life is inevitably fucked up from beginning to end. Both shows feature silly anime tropes that abound in your typical romantic comedy, except there is hardly anything comedic about them. The audience is forced to suffer along with the cast in the realization of the absurd nature of the human condition.

Violet Evergarden

Happy Sugar Life
add

The two series share a premise: a tough, mentally broken heroine searching for the meaning of love. The heroines are both highly competent and badass, but have to face the consequences of the blood on their hands. The love they eventually stumble upon is unconventional, asymmetric and bound for disappointment. That being said these series are clearly meant for different audiences and espouse different worldviews. Violet Evergarden could be called grimbright while Happy Sugar Life is your classic grimdark.
