Space Adventure Cobra is Cowboy Bebop's best known source of inspiration. The citationism is exasperated, especially to American culture, but it is not yet influenced by postmodernism of the 90s. Both works are born to entertain the spectator. Science fiction with evasive purpose.

Hideaki Anno admitted to being inspired by Yoshiyuki Tomino's film. The crude and depressive atmospheres, the apocalyptic finale and visual metaphors pay homage to one of the best products of the 80s.

Yoshiyuki Tomino and Ryosuke Takahashi are two of the greatest exponents of the realistic robotic genre. It changes the conception of the mecha, no longer a divine machine but normal combat machines used by men. It also loses the concept of antagonist in favor of a more complex definition of war that overwhelms people forced to kill for institutional duty. More mature themes are introduced.
