This is my first review, please don't expect too much. Also, it may say that I haven't seen all the episodes. That is because I rewatch this show from time to time.
Keion, better known as “K-On!” is a Slice-of-Life anime based on five adorable girls and their efforts in “The Light Music Club.” K-On was a show I watched based off of the recommendations section I saw for the anime “Kokoro Connect.” And boy was I glad that I did. Before I begin I would like to warn you that K-On is a show about “cute girls doing cute things.” If you aren’t really into
...
that kind of stuff I would go look for a different show. Now, let’s get started.
The Characters:
The first episode of “K-on!” introduces us to the first four main characters. The great thing about this show is that they all have their own original personality and none of the girls really give off the same type of vibe. You have Ritsu, the drummer. Ritsu is the wild one of the group. She attempts to get the group to go along with her silly ideas and usually goes all out against the ideas she doesn’t like. Ritsu is very lively and is able to keep the show a lot more interesting. Then there is her childhood friend, Mio, the Bass player and sometimes singer. Mio is the shy one, and having Ritsu as her best friend, it creates some interesting situations. Sometimes she gets really embarrassed and it she becomes very lovable to watch. Ritsu helps push her through her fears, giving us a fun dynamic duo to watch. Next is Yui, the lead guitarist and singer. She is really the key character of this show, because it’s mostly about her life. Yui is a really lazy airhead who is on the verge of being a “NEET.” She enters the light music club thinking that it was something completely different. Watching her grow as a guitarist is enjoyable to watch, and proves for great character development. Finally is Mugi the pianist, whom personally is my favorite character is the silly rich girl. She doesn’t really know about more common things such as fast food joints and arcades, and it puts up for some great comedy. It was funny to watch her learn about all the things that we “middle-class” have to put up with and what we do for fun. Finally, is the rhythm guitarist Azusa. She isn’t introduced to later after the first four go through their freshmen year. She is one year younger than the other four, and is the same age as Yui’s sister Ui. She is the girl who tries to get the club to actually practice music and not laze around the whole time. Her go-getter attitude is what makes her cute and fun to watch. All of the side characters are quite the cool bunch as well. They all provide more humor and play well with the main characters.
The Story:
As I said earlier this show is about “The Light Music Club” or Keion Club (K-On! The title is a play-off of this.) At first there are zero members in the club and it is about to be disbanded. But Ritsu while forcing Mio, begin to bring the club back to life attempting to get the required four members. Eventually Mugi, looking for the choir club, and Yui, who is looking for something easy end up joining the duo meeting this requirement. The Light Music Club’s main focus IS SUPPOSE to be playing “Light-hearted” music as their advisor Sawako calls it; but they actually don’t really do much but drink tea and eat snacks. Well you may now be wondering, “How can a show like this be any good at all?” Well the main reason behind it is because it is just really funny and the jokes that end up being made within the show are so great and memorable. There are also the bonds between the characters. The main ones of Mio and Ritsu and Yui and Azusa are just so cute to watch. The way they end up working together to get their problems solved, such as finding a way to get Yui her first guitar, to the camaraderie between the friends, puts such a fine feeling within you, causing you to beg for more. With the hardships of getting through school and practicing music, this show gives me some of the most fun I have ever had.
Music:
Do you like J-Pop? If you do you will surely love the music presented by The Light Music Club’s band known as “After School Tea Time.” They actually members of the Japanese cast sing all of the songs that the band in the show sings. The music is crisp and soothing and is a joy to listen to. I actually have put many of the songs on CDs to listen to in my car. There is also the background music. It’s very cheerful and playful but none of it is really too ground breaking like “Ring Ring Ring!” from the show “Little Busters!” While the background music is really nothing too memorable, the OPs, EDs, and insert songs keep you coming back for more.
Art:
The art to this show is absolutely phenomenal. Of course, this is nothing unexpected of Kyoto Animation, who have produced masterpieces such as Kanon, and Lucky Star. The art is all fluid and clear, very pleasing to the eyes. I personally enjoyed how they do a few of the performance scenes, as they use well worked camera angles to show the audience, and the emotion of the band themselves. As usual I would say that Kyoto Animation hit another homerun art wise.
Final Remarks:
I waited until now to reveal that “K-On!” is my favorite show, or at least one of them. The only show that stands with it would be the original Pokemon (Kanto and Johto series.) I have purchased all episodes as well as the movie and even have most of the songs from the show on my Nook (Yes I use a Nook for music). K-On has been my favorite show even after watching about 80 more series. With that K-On does receive a 10/10. Thanks for reading and I hope you check it out.
