SPOILER !
Although I keep it quite vague...
The Characters were fleshed out pretty well for the course of its short run. Mariko being a completely wrapped in her unshed emotions that keep eating at her and it coming out in the form of self mutilation and terrifyingly low self esteem where she ends up accepting her constant abused state to be how she should continue living her life.
Shii-chan having to take the role of a nurturing caretaker and protector to mariko, feeling that they really only have each other, and at a constant crossroads
...
on what she can do to help mariko even though she is just another child herself with no real power but to lend an ear and comfort mariko the best she can. Not much is said unfortunately on shii-chan's family life but it doesn't take away from the overall story.
Both of their characters mesh well together, Shii-Chan had tried her best to leverage with mariko and her destructive behavior by always being there to pick up all the broken pieces until shii-chan had enough with the mental anguish and as a final attempt tried to get mariko to come to terms with her self-destructive lifestyle. a last chance to have her ask for help.
Overall I think this is one of the most realistic portrayals of abuse that I've read, I know a lot of people will disagree because of how extreme the story can turn but I say otherwise. you truly are blessed to not know anyone or be the person in such a situation... it is a lot more common than you think.
The author makes an important statement in the first few pages of chapter 1 where she states that no one in the story is free of guilt and she's correct on that. I went in thinking I would hate shii-chan but I could only sympathize. now for other characters... no other choice but to hate haha except for like makio, u cannot h8 the dude, although he was very mysterious and I wished we got more of him but still nice.
