I came for the comedy and stayed for the story.
Though I still stayed for the comedy, of course.
Gintama was both heartbreaking and captivating, wholesome and evil, funny and gloomy, cunning and simple. And this ending was the best for a comedy anime-- an appropriate one, if I may say so, since it leaves you quite satisfied with how things were wrapped up yet you also feel this pang in your chest as you realize that this is it; this is how it ends and we're not getting any more content after this. That pang, if I liken it to an emotion, may seem
...
like homesickness for me. Gintama gives you that homey vibe that you feel whenever you watch an anime and stayed with it too much that you kinda wanna break the wall from 3D and come join them in their 2D world. Gintama's characters, from the main trio, shinsengumi, and kabuki-cho fam down to the side characters who do not show up much in the show-- they all make up this interesting world of the past and the present, both in the literal sense of the anime's setting of Edo and futuristic influence of amanto, and also in the sense of time, with its flashbacks and time-skips. Each of them is important, and I just love how saving Edo isn't just as fun and complete without the whole gang-- and by "gang", I mean everyone.
The only reason I gave this a nine, though I certainly think it also deserves a 10 (is it so ironic if I rated every aspect a 10 but overall it's a 9 xD), is because I kinda wanna see how life turned out for everyone, I guess. Did the characters build a family of their own? If so, did they still stay in Yorozuya, in shinsengumi, or in their respective roles from Gintama before? I sure do hope Hasegawa has evolved from being a madao. Also, if there was an after story or epilogue, I might just want to see my otp end up together for real xD I know this route may be tricky since not everyone has the same opinion on how they want things to end in the show, but yep, just my two cents. I also understand how shows in comedy genre usually don't really go down that road.
Anyways, I'm here reviewing the final part but I have yet to watch the Benizakura movie. And I will make sure to scour every content I may have missed and maybe even read the manga just to check how things may be different from the anime. After that, I'd continue reading their doujins without understanding much of it except the illustrations (damn if only I know how to read japanese, but bless those artists who continue to feed our Gintama-hungry souls), and after that... I don't know how long before I get over this show and find another series.
Though, I don't wanna get over this show.
