It may look like a childish anime, but it has a very deep meaning. Through Kotaro we begin to experience all of kinds of relationships, parenting and adulthood hardships and every kind of everyday life hardships. On the other hand it might feel like we are the main character Kotaro, despite being left alone he still finds happiness in life and positivnes in things. I think thats the main message of the anime, dont let other things or people ruin your day and despite all kinds of hardships, face it.
For the art it was very simple, because the emphasis was on the story.
