When I first started to watch Lovely Complex, I felt no small amount of trepidation. However, after the first five or so episodes, I found myself pleasantly surprised by just how much charm such a - dare I say - cheesy rom-com had.
The characters two main character, Otani and Risa, are a perfect fit for each other apart from their heights. This leads to some very comedic moments. The story line works so well because both Otani and Risa can be so in tune in one scene and then have a massive fall out the next... and it's believable.

After watching all of the episodes, I can't help but feel that so much more could have been done. 13 episodes was just simply not enough to really do the series justice.
What this anime did do well lay mostly in the characters. It was obvious to me that all of the characters had reasons behind their actions and the personalities of each one felt different and refreshing. The deep, emotional scenes between Sana and Nanaka especially add depth to the anime, as a whole. This was the highlight of the series for me. This is a simply brilliant slice-of-life anime. I could shower it with superlatives and hyperbolic language until the cows come home but it still would not do it true justice. For me, it is something that I looked forward to watching every day after college and I was never disappointed. 26 episodes and not one of them were anything below excellence.
The characters are wide ranging in personality and none of them feel 'skirted over' in the slightest. Both the opening and the closing themes were really well suited to the anime along with the "in episode" tracks. I found the plot to be enthralling ... |
