Okay this manga is for those ecchi lovers who are looking for a lot of sex (border line hentai) but still have an interesting mature plot that makes you actually think. this is for you.
Art is lovely and the lines are amazing. I think because the artist is a female she knows how to really bring out the female body out in this manga and I believe she did couple of hentais too.
Regards to story, its really really good for this form of genre. What i mean is that a lot of times when we read an ecchi harem manga we have that
...
typical weasle kinda moral dude who wouldnt have sex with any girls or in some cases have that dude thats all for it but he just always miss that opportunity for the sake of comedy. Well we have neither of that. YAY! the main character however does sustain from sex due to his personal morals but its fine, because its quite admirable. However do not let that disapoint you because other characters in the manga will make up for his loss of sexual activity.
Another bad taste for ecchi harem genre is that there is a lack of any serious plot. But here we see a dark twisted side to humanity and politics which is really interesting. IF we exchange the male characters as nuclear power, you kinda get what i mean.
Overall i know this is much of a review but i guess if your into a solid read with interesting characters and a bit of dark psychological theme with the whole world being a harem and tons and tons of sex this is for you!

Okay im writing this from the future me. telling me to watch this when it comes out. I remember watching the first couple of episodes and dropping it because it has such a slow start. But keep watching, you will regret watching this in 2018 because you will not forgive yourself for years of wasting your boring holidays and never watching this. Yes it has an incredible slow start but the character development is worth it! after episode 5 you start getting hooked, from episode 12, omg, I just hope you arent watching this during your end of year exams.

Other reviewers are saying this episode has nothing to do with the actual anime, or that it was a mindless shallow waste of 11mn of your life. BUT THEY ARE SO FKN WRONG!
Only 11 minutes long and from first glance it looks like any another typical bath peeking perverted scene that shows the shallow story that questions the creators effort in even making this. BUT its far from typical and if anything it the deepest 11mn of your life. PLease let me explain.
You will have to have watched the original anime to understand what im saying. In my review for the original anime I
...
have stated that this anime is by far my favourite and most original RPG style trapped in a fantasy world game anime yet.
This anime portrays the reality of life. With all its rewards and consequences, victories and failures, beauty and ugliness that life gives us, the anime beautifully orchestrated and somehow intertwined all this and its genre into a masterful tapestry.
So this 11 minute special is definitely an additional piece of art that shows the reality of life within the anime but rather is reflects the characters current spiritual state.
The boys and the girls are surviving in the fantasy world. They have gone through a series of confusion and losses. Real life and death consequences. Thus their hunger for survival increases. To survive no longer became a need, but more, a reason for their existence.
The proof of existence that they are alive, alive not to just survive the world, but alive in the sense that they can dream is shown by the ability to hope. That they can be excited for the future, that they can live for something, that they have ambitions, that they have a sense of desire which ultimately gives them purpose for their existence.
The biggest thing that the team struggled was purpose. They had no idea what their purpose was in the fantasy world (also since their memories was wiped before arriving there). So the only thing they can do by default was to simply survive. But this special episode breaks that paradigm. It gives these boys a sense of excitement, desire, purpose, eventually "life" that they havent felt in a long time since arriving in the world.
"this is where our dream lies...lets drink to that. To this moment. To being alive. Now let the curtains to our dream rise" this is the quote that builds the pivotal foundation for this episode. Haruhiro says this as he looks at the wall that stands in the way between them and the girls who are taking their baths. He says this after Ranta redefines and counters Haruhiros statement that they have lost their humanity. Ranta says "no we have won by losing. Our instincts our hearts won". With this Haruhiro says "I see...so we have won without even realising...victory?" This ultimately means that Haruhiro and the gang at first felt like they have lost humanity by being such a low life pervert but really it means they have won because they are operating out of their natural ability to dream and desire as a man. Something that they havent felt in a very long time since coming into the world.
The world made them feel like they were trapped and were doing things that felt inhumane in order to survive. They were functioning out of an indifferent robotic like setting. Eating, sleeping, working mindlessly without no real dream thus ultimately losing their humanity. However in this episode they break out of that for the first time, they have found a desire, a dream that could be costly, but valuable enough for them to risk it all and go for it. It contradicted the purposeless life they were living and for the first time felt they were living for something. Therefore Haruhiros revelation brings breakthrough, the fact that their "hearts won" by being able to hope again is what mattered.
Ranta keeps insisting that they go for it and asks the question "wont you regret it?" if they didnt. Here Manato brings the drop. He says “I might regret it. I cant say for sure I won’t regret it. But what do you think is going to happen if we go further? We are already excited right now. it would be bad if we were to get even more. We would go past the point of no return, but then we would have to head back. to our room. the four of us together. I dont think I would be able to endure that.” Here Manato is ultimately talking about the fear of being disappointed by hope, the fear of failing, the fear of understanding the limits of their capacity, the fear of knowing that their best is not good enough. He ultimately brings the reality check of hoping, desiring, dreaming is dangerous because in reality it might not be met. And he says that the consequence of not even trying and regretting it later is much more bearable than ultimately hoping for it but being disappointed by failing.
Then Moguzo brings such a powerful statement that reveals an important perspective. He didnt passively wait around, he innitiates by being the sacrifice for the team (which is symbolic of his role as the tank) and says "we cant back off now." Haruhiro ultimately understands that "we're alive...thats right. We are alive. Right now we can be sure of that". He finally understood that for them to go even this far into peeking meant they have already achieved alot. That they were already operating out of their hopes and dreams which wasnt even possible from where they have come.
In conclusion. This 11 minutes special episode is sooo deep that you can almost miss the beauty of the message thats inside it. ITs camouflaged by fan service and typical ecchi anime humour but if anything it portrayed the depth of life that challenges the audience if we too are alive or simply just living in our world.

"The beautiful depth of the story itself compensates for the drag of this anime..."
okay Im not going to write a review on every little aspect and detail. Rather I do want to highlight the negative side of this anime because there is only few that bugs me. If dealt with then I believe it could be the most amazing anime of all time.
My biggest pet peeves with this anime are mainly two things.
1) the DRAG. Seriously the last anime that I thought was a drag was Dragonball Z. Seriously One Piece takes 1/4 of your entire episode on the starting theme song and
...
the "previously on One Piece". THus I always fast forward to the 4-5mn mark to start watching. Also they spend another good 1/4 of the anime on slow walking characters, slow reactions, to slow opening doors, to replayed movements. Its hilariously dragged out.
HOWEVER i get it! they are pumping out episodes non stop since 1999 on top of movie specials, and special eps. I get it, its probably how the people in the studio cope with it. But still, it drives me insane. THats why I always binge watch One Piece. Once a year during Christmas holidays I watch around 50 episodes. BUT F*CK ME! even with a year worth of episodes its only like 1 week into the actual story line.
2) Another pet peeve is the character of Luffy. YEs you heard me, the main character, the indestructible, loved by all, Monkey f*cking D Luffy. Dont get me wrong, do i like the character? absolutely. But he pisses me off because of his character and personality. YEs at first i enjoyed his irrational, free spirited, careless fearless personality, but that goes into some extent. With every crisis that arrises because of Luffys immaturity alot of ppl suffer. But ofcourse its an anime so it all works out in the end, so i dont mind it. However what I do mind is the fact that he just doesnt grow up nor learn from his mistakes. Hes the same luffy from ep 1. Sure he learnt new skills, and broaden his boundaries. But his major maturity level, of dealing with situation hasnt changed. If he knows his rash decisions or irrational behaviours have caused many people to stumble then like any other human being he should be able to learn from it. Thus I find him selfish in that sense. But the irony is he is portrayed as the most selfless character who is willing to die for his friends, which is the cause of his vast popularity. But my major argument is simply, hes selfish in the sense of not having the self control in his lack of maturity. like any other decent human they should be able to grow and mature. But I think he hasnt. But I understand without this side of him the anime wouldnt be as adventurist as it is, which we all known to love.
Overall its still an amazing anime, but this is just my honest opinion.

S T O R Y: 10/10
My pet peeve from Anime is rushed, unrealistic meaningless plots with no build ups. However "Hai to Gensou no Grimgar" doesn't do this. To be honest at first I felt it was so slow because of the level of excellence they were putting into the story build up. This is definitely a risk competing in the market of quick profitable 'B' grade animes with a lot of fan service. I guess I was
...
so conformed to this style of anime that I was at first bothered by the slow story line.
After SAO Ive been pretty much watching every single RPG type anime. I do like the idea of certain ways of doing things, but by far I found this one the most original. It had the values of a RPG but it is within the setting of real life consequences. For example: typical RPG anime tends to get the main character OP, or they some how posses a ridiculous rare item or weapon of some sort which gives them an advantage. Also they are teamed with probably the strongest or unique individuals in the game. Everything is efficient, such as spoils you win from battle somehow goes straight to your invisible inventory. The beasts/ enemies you fight distribute no real consequences. In "Hai to Gensou no Grimgar" you see non of that. Its like living a non-fictional concept in a fictional setting. Such as a single arrow can actually kill someone (which is relatively true in the real world). A sharp weapon is as strong as any cool looking rare legendary swords, meaning they can both kill. I also appreciated how they incorporated the level of reality in a daily persons life in this. For example, they portrayed the reality of providing food for the table takes work and effort. You have to go kill goblins or wild beasts. However the beast dont just die from a slash. They would start running away if they get scared or injured, thus you have the chance of loosing your bounty. Also they carry emotion and they too show the complex personality as any other individual creature and not a simple AI. They show hate, fear, horror, sorrow, joy, excitement and they too don't want to die! These all play into account to stimulate the complexity of life for the audience to contemplate as they are put in the lenses of the characters.
Another thing I really enjoyed was how real relationship was portrayed in this anime. What I mean by this is that "Hai to Gensou no Grimgar" really emphasize how hard it is working with real people and building relationships, just like it would be in the real world. Misunderstandings, assumptions, expectations, responsibilities, lack of character, personality types and there clashes, being introverted vs extraverted, being patient, when to speak when not to speak, believing the best for one another regardless the situation, the importance of clear and integral communication, the list goes on. It really showed the realness of hardship and the beauty of working with other people.
A R T: 10/10
I believe Anime in general should be pleasing to the eye. What I mean by this is that anime in general should carry out the form of art that can not be manufactured in any other film hence we turn to Anime to receive this satisfaction. "Hai to Gensou no Grimgar" does just this with one of the most unique style of anime art I have seen. Its simply beautiful. Of course by no means I'm saying that it is THE best, because styles of art can differ in categories, such as Hayao Miyazaki works! However the quality of each background, character movements to the natural lightings sets this anime apart from many others.
O V E R A L L: 9.5/10
The reason why I'm giving 9.5 instead of a 10 is because the anime was so short. 12 episode is definitely not enough nor justice to the level of potential this anime carries. There is so much unanswered questions. Its almost just barely the tip of the iceberg. Still so much to unravel about the characters, about their purpose, about the RPG ...gosh I want to see it soon! please come out!
