Watching True tears was like having your best friend in the entire world give you a million dollars. Then, right when you take it, he/she takes it back, gives it to your enemy and then punches you in the stomach. And yet, despite the knot in your stomach, you're still somewhat happy.
At least, that's what it was like for me.
Story-7/10
The story of True Tears is somewhat typical, the boy falls in love with his childhood friend, she doesn't love hime back, a couple other girls love him, he's not sure how he feels anymore, blah blah. But, it was presented in such
...
a way that you sort of forget that you've witnessed something very similiar in other animes. And it's truly the story itself that gives you that 'punched in the gut' feeling, because up until the very end, you really don't know for sure who Shin'ichiro will end up with. In most other animes of this type, you can usually tell right off the bat.
Art-9/10
The art was beautiful, and the animation was flawless. The scenes by the ocean and in the snow were just pretty and they were realistic enough to make you feel like you could reach out and touch them. The still frames were also very nice, and added a lot to the feelings the artists were trying to portray.
Sound-8/10
The opening and ending themes were very good--good vocals, good melody--and they fit the feeling of the show pretty well. The voice acting was very good, as well. Each character's voice fit their personalities to a T and the emotional scenes were acted in such a way that made you want to cry.
Character-7/10
I really wanted to give the characters a higher rating, but I had a problem with the development. They did a wonderful job of developing Shin'ichiro, Noe, Nobuse and Aiko. But one main character really fell short. Hiromi was so under-developed, I couldn't even stomach her as a main character, especially as the initial love interest of Shin'ichiro. We know really nothing about Hiromi, even up until the end. We don't know what she's like really, other than that she's quiet and plays basketball. For me, to put Hiromi in a major role of the anime was just such a disappointment, especially towards the end.
Overall-9/10
I found myself enjoying every minute of this anime, even when I felt like my stomach had tied itself into a knot that couldn't be untied until I cooled off for a couple hours (which actually happened at the end of the show). Despite the ending, I was very happy with the anime and I was glad I watched it, and would watch it again.
