Overall, I do reccomend this season of Danmachi. Coming off the back of season IV (the best Danmachi has been, in my opinion) is tough to follow up, and initially I thought they were doing a great job.

This season is still worth a watch, but you may also leave the work feeling dissatisfied.


If you're like me, Danmachi is at it's best when it's DARK. Season V follows up on the tone-shift presented by the previous season pretty well and it makes for a magnificent section of build-up to the story's climax.

The first 10 episodes of the season, in this regard, are fantastic. Bringing the story's ... tone down to a low point makes for thrilling juxtaposition to that climax and emboldens the investment from the audience.

Unfortunately, the story's climax failed to deliver on that build-up. The section does have some interesting twists and turns which make it worth watching, but ultimately Danmachi's resolution to the conflict felt as if it was retreading old ground and in turn made the arcs of the characters involved, which were some of the best in the series to that point, severely less compelling than they were before.

This is also the season's "action" section - perhaps with more time and a bigger budget, the focus on action and spectacle could be supplemental to the story taking a backseat, though Danmachi fails to be visually interesting with its action (most of the time) and the strategies involved aren't particularly engaging either. The revelations we have about the characters from these battles do tend to be interesting though. (Unfortunately just not in the big climactic boss battle).


Despite its lackluster ending segment, Danmachi Season V is still a stand-out season of the show and I'm confident that fans of the series, even those with a love-hate relationship with it like I do will find elements to enjoy. The world-building remains strong as ever, and even though it fizzles out by the end, the journey is still worth experiencing.
