It hurts knowing that things could've been different if different choices were made. These anime blame some type of entity for their own faults in life. While "The Tatami Galaxy" focuses on the could've, would've, and should've scenarios, "Welcome to the NHK" focuses on rehabilitating the social aspect of giving up on life. Life lessons are taught throughout the shows.

To protect the world, the characters must work together to defeat the evil that has arisen. “Zettai Bouei Leviathan” and “Onigiri” have some type of unknown force that threatens the planet. Moreover, the characters in these anime are a bit dysfunctional with each other. However, as time goes on, they start to set aside their differences and work together as a team. Not only do these two have similar characteristics, the two shows don’t really take itself too seriously giving that comical feel you’d hope to expect. Also, they’re based off their own games. If you’re looking for a light-hearted fantasy anime that derives its source material from a video game, then these may be for you.

The characterization between these two are quite similar. “Guilty Crown” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion” feature a weak, indecisive, self-loathing main character who wants to live a “normal” life. Forced against their will, they are put on the battlefield in midst to make an impact on the world. While there is mecha action between these two shows, the story of “Guilty Crown” leans towards the supernatural element as “Neon Genesis Evangelion” focuses more on sci-fi.

It's hard to get back into things after being discouraged for so long. "Welcome to the N.H.K!" and "ReLIFE" feature a NEET protagonist who has hit rock bottom. When all hope may have seemed lost, one day, they are granted an opportunity to redo their life. The situations that happen in these anime are very relatable in terms of work and adulthood. While "ReLIFE" is a bit more cheerful and drama filled in its high school setting, the tone of "Welcome to the N.H.K", however, is darker with mature themes. For those looking for realistic and relatable life situations, these are great to check out.

Bloodshed. Gruesome action. Supernatural beings. Troubled by their pasts, one must keep fighting and one must keep suffering. What must they do to survive? Their fate lies on the battlefield. While these are all similarities between the two anime, “Berserk” focuses on the main character, Guts, and his journey with a mercenary group called “Band of the Hawk”. The main character, Afro, in “Afro Samurai”, on the other hand, is on the hunt for revenge to look for the person who murdered his father.

“Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu” and “Steins;Gate” have the concept of going back in time. Problems are always arising for the main characters. With that being said, these anime can have a very dark and serious tone. In these two series, it’s needless to say that we get to watch the main character grow in more ways than one. While the main character in Naruto is a delinquent, and the one in My Hero Academia is a timid and polite boy, similarly they only wish for the best for the people around them. If you like a story about characters who start off with nothing and prove to everyone else that they can be something, then you’ll most likely like these.

Needless to say, the world of KonoSuba and Onigiri takes place inside a game-like world. While the story of KonoSuba is to fight a Demon King in order to get the main character’s - Kazuma Satou – life back, Onigiri is about a group of girls fighting malevolent creatures called the Kamikui to stop them from spreading. Even though the specified goal is clearly different, they share a comical tone in which makes the viewer fall in love with the characters. For the most part, KonoSuba and Onigiri are self-aware. To elaborate, they acknowledge that the world is game-like. In KonoSuba, the lead role is male. Onigiri, on the other hand, doesn’t star a male lead role. However, it does contain a male and an abundance of colorful female characters with a unique personality like KonoSuba.

For those looking for romantic, comedic, ecchi, and harem fun, then look no further! The ordinary life of these main characters are completely changed when attractive beings from outer space are imposed onto them out of nowhere! While Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou is about monster girls looking to marry the main character, Kimihito Kurusu (due to the forbidden sexual interactions between species by the Interspecies Exchange Act), To-LOVE-Ru also has a similar storyline where the main character, Rito Yuuki, is – unexpectedly – forced to marry a princess of an alien empire (who ran away to avoid an unwanted political marriage). However, Rito Yuuki, has someone else in mind in who he wants to marry. Similarly, the main character finds himself in these odd, sexual, and unexpected situations with the female characters in the anime. While it’s all unintentional, the race towards gaining the affection of the main character builds up!

Needless to say, K-On! and Love Love! School Idol Project are music-centric anime. While K-On’s story revolves around four high school girls joining a light music club in order to keep it from disbanding, Love Live! School Idol Project’s story is about the main character, Honoka, and her group of friends creating a school idol group called "μ's" (muse) in order to attract new students and prevent the school from shutting down. Although the two have a few different plot specifics, they both work to prevent something they love from closing. In addition, the overall theme of friendship and passion and drive are present. With enough hard work and dedication, these anime show that you can achieve anything you put your mind to.

What would you do if you had to live in a fantasy world where the rules are governed by game mechanics? Would you bet your whole life trying to win and become a god or would you defeat a demon king in order to get your life back? Kono Subarashii and No Game No Life have similar storylines where the main characters are sent to another realm by a god/goddess. Furthermore, the shut-in and gamer archetype are present in both anime. If you love an anime where outrageous and dysfunctional characters interact with the main character to achieve their goal, then Kono Subarashii and No Game No Life is for you.
