One of the best compliments I can give a piece of media is "I wish it went on longer". I would say the same for Gokko.
Following the journey of a former hikkikomori NEET into parenthood after kidnapping was an unexpectedly wholesome ordeal. Stories with characters that are morally dubious is a something I enjoy. Stories like that have a tendancy to lean on tropes and be quite edgy though. Gokko thankfully is pretty charming with it's prose and tones. Able to switch between light and dark moments pretty well and touch on the worst of humanity without coming off as edgy.
The story starts introducing more
...
side characters half way through and I think it does enhance some of the slice of life aspects of it and the moral lessons the chapters conclude or muse on. But this is where the short length doesn't help it. By the end of the manga most of them get shafted in favour of the backstories and concluding events for the final arc. Which sucks cuz given the short length we don't get much use out of them after a few chapters at most. Even though I find all of them to be charming and enjoyable. Each carrying their own negatives and baggage that makes them feel human.
The art is also solid. Durpy, but in a cute childish way that can feel at times oddly beautiful. Like a crude children's book, which can juxtapose the grim moments really well.
Overall, I think if you can enjoy a morally grey MC and are willing to lend an ear to the most disgusting members of society and their lives and minds, I think there is something on offer here for you. The manga doesn't justify each person or their lives. It scrutinizes and reprimands them, but also shows that they are all human regardless. With the main focus and hook being a wholesome story of a father and daughter for a good chunk of it. Mileage varies on the ending though. You'll have to see that for yourself.

This story is actual just pain.
Adapted from a hentai doujin series of the same name "Entanglement" weaves a story of blah blah blah. 4 friends fool around then NTR and sex ensues. There is much to say for the narrative being told here. With themes of the nature of sex, desire and individual happiness and mistakes. However, the journey there is misery and will genuinely make you question if the MC stayed sane over the course of these events and the end of it. Granted this is speaking as someone who's read the original, so I know where this is headed and the new additions
...
added to this version of the story I have to say has exponentially ruined me more. The story isn't really bad for the way it tells it's story. Objectively it's well told. It's just a generally plain awful experience to read.
It is baffling the decisions the MC makes in this. In the original you'll feel sympathetic for the MC and can infer that perhaps he was greatly traumatized by the events that transpired and that he developed a way of thinking about sex in the most negative way possible. In here? Nah, you'll just eventually hate him.
--Spoiler Warning--
The absolute cowardice, indecision and choices he makes regarding a certain female character will destroy you. Rent a Girlfriend doesn't have jack on this absolute filthy cuck of an MC. You are first feel bad for him, but as the story goes on you will want him to die. Heck, I want him to die. So you'll likely lack much enjoyment from his front.
--Spoiler End--
As for the other 3 friends? They're okay. Pretty well developed and fleshed out in natural ways. You'll probably come to hate everyone aside ftom the black haired girl, who was honestly just getting the best out of life throughout the whole story. But, I guess it also depends on your perspective on sexuality and promiscuity. Which the manga is always exploring. Not in ground breaking ways, but just well enough. If you're coming from a religious perspective or hold conservative ideologies most likely from the jump you'll think everyone in this story was wrong and an idiot from word go. I am, so that was my take, but it's whatever if you just see the story for what it is as a coming of age narrative on sexuality and junk. Yet, I argue that even if not and you're coming from the other end of the philosophy and ideals pool you'd still consider many of the decisions characters make to have been outright ridiculous or just plain mistakes given how much many of them later regret them. Eventually though if you've read the original story you can rest assured that in some way shape or form these characters in their adolescence filled with heartache and growth will find a place that they all find comfortable for who they end up becoming and realising about themselves by the end of it all...
Gosh this manga was so bad. Please, do not read this story. If the original doujins are too much for you. Trust. You'll be gulping down something to ease your mind after reading this version.

I mean it was okay. This movie is mainly carried by good animation, music and fan service. If you've seen One Piece Strong World then you've basically got that, but with nice music videos mixed in and crazier action scenes. Yet even then the story is mediocre at best like in Strong World with a lot of broken logic that you kinda just have to sift through as you go on, because unlike with the original series it does not care to explore these unique and interesting ideas in depth. You get surface level ideals thrown in that could be really cool, but ultimately go
...
no where because we have to have a 2 minute action scene spliced in of the admirals and marines padding out the run time for the nth time with these movies. Essentially, just like Strong World.

The fan service too is pretty sparse as well. We got Shanks plastered all over the promotion, but he really doesn't appear or impact the story much aside from flash backs all the way until the last quarter of the movie and even then they really didn't do as much as it seemed to promise. They come in and don't fight anyone for Uta's sake or whatever and then throw a few shots at a giant CGI demon thing, which in fairness was fairly cool to see even if it was brief. That's about it. He's not even really the actual antagonist of the movie as it seemed to be. Uta was and she was nailing it as one, but we should've gotten more into her mind set of being alone with her hate for all those years and having her fans reject her goal. That mad decent was cool, but from there we don't really look into it in an interesting way until the very end of the movie. Instead it's just more fan service and nice animation. Gear 5 didn't was also basically non existent. It came in for a pop in for no reason whatsoever, basically did nothing that utilizes it's actual abilities and that was it. No toonification or fun bouncing around like with every other appearance of the form. It was just there for a big anime punch. The fan service is so vapid it's ridiculous, but the weird part is that most of it was done just enough that it wasn't substantial yet I and many fans didn't walk out from the movie mad at all. It's just weirdly frustrating.
I'm pretty sure Uta died at the end there, which was kinda whatever, but her music still plays on the den den mushis so I don't know what that's all about nor where the heck she is supposed to be after the events that took place. It's also weird that her fans nearly got forced into mass suicide cuz of her, but everyone's weirdly chill? Like, they all seem to still be listening to her music still with no reservations on the fact they had their lives nearly taken and got turned into unmoving and unthinking dolls. Like, what happened to that Celestial Dragon guy? He just let Shanks slide with the body? He just allows the music to continue around the world like nothing happened in spite of the fact that these guys are very very petty. This should be a global incident. No one is above those guys. Also everyone seems to be okay now? All that war, death, disease, inequality, slavery and murder? "Nah guys it's good life goes on and we still got good music" is essentially the main take away, but at no point in the movie do they actually address the fact that Uta's pseudo heaven is probably leagues better. They don't really look into the notion of struggling onwards in life and hoping for a great future while working together or some crap like that. Uta just whiffs off into wherever and never gets to be down to earth with the fans. This movie dangles with the ideas of the power of art, familial bonds, opening yourself up to reality and the nature of fiction and the real, running away from reality, etc. However it never delves into them enough to be substantial so all they remain as is just ideas and nothing more.

I found the story extremely enjoyable. It was surprising to see how many people did not feel the same way, which seems to come down to the short length of each story. However, I find it pretty great as a nice little casual watch when you're feeling comfy and wanna get more of those feels.
The movie is divided into segmented anthologies, which follow different characters all experiencing a different aspect of life and romance. Most seem to disdain the short length but I find it actually elevates each narrative. A lot of us have probably seen all sorts of romances under the sun so we
...
know how these stories typically play out and often this can lead to stories dragging out as us viewers can see the entire plot miles away yet the story won't pick up the pace. That ain't a problem here. The short length means we don't have time to get hung up on meaningless dialogue or unnecessary plot points or needless melodrama. Instead what we get is subtle vignettes of their lives and romances. The words are careful made and the stories never lingers too long on any topic and we learn all sorts of things about the romances and what kind of people they are just through the animation, story and dialogue. It also helps that 3/4 of the lives explored are very mature and nuanced topics. Any one of these stories could be explored in any vast long running sorts of ways, but don't let that notion make you miss the point. The key word here is vignette. The stories are meant to be short and fleeting yet fluttery in a way, hence the title "Happy-go-lucky days".
Although if it were perfect I would've given it a ten so sadly I gotta knock this story down a peg for one reason alone. The last story goes on far too long. Part of what made this story good was how they cut the fat, yet were kept the depth we want from a story. The final story with the kids betrays this in its latter portion. We end up going through all the melodrama most hate from most shoujo romances and the story becomes extremely generic with the typical anime highschool stuff you see all the time. The story starts presenting all sorts of ideas that never get looked into more even though they at first appear to be vital and key to the rest of the story. It also does not help that the female love interest is unlikable and some weird stuff happens with her that I won't mention cuz spoilers. It honestly was the worst and most abrupt section of the movie and it just was so ugghhhh that it brought this movie down for me from a near 10 to near 8.
Honestly, you could do with just the first 3 and stop there. My advice is to skip to the end of the 4th story the second it starts. You'll thank yourself a whole lot for that. Anyways it was a great time and I hope my review was helpful to you in any way.

This Anime was the highlight of my winter, with its beautiful soundtrack, captivating visuals and a great story and characters to match it all. The murder scene was so intense I sad to myself "I see what all the fuss was about" it caught my eye in that split second.
When I found out that the sensei did it I was so shocked well not really cuz' the candy kind of gave it away. BUT STILL!
The one and only problem I had was this....
WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY KILL MY SHIP LIKE THAT! I MEAN COME ON I CANNOT BE THE ONLY PERSON IN THE
...
ENTIRE ANIME COMMUNITY THAT WAS SO PISSED OFF AT THE FACT THAT THEY MADE ALL OF US FALL IN LOVE WITH THEIR LOVE AND THEN JUST KILL IT OFF LIKE WE WERE DOG SH** ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD! WHAT THE HECK THE MC SAVED YOUR DAMN LIFE, GAVE UP HIS COLLEGE AND TEENAGE YEARS FOR YOU TO BE HAPPY AND LIVE AND YOU RETURN THE FAVOR BY F***ING WITH ANOTHER GUY, MARRYING THEM AND RUBBING THE KID IN HIS FACE! SCREW SALT IN YOUR WOUNDS YOU PUT F***ING ACID ON THEM YOU DAMN B****.
Now that we cleared that up, thanks for reading all the way through.
