I tried to like this show I really, really tried. I love Mech anime and romance anime and action I love it all so when I started watching Darling in the Franxx I was pumped!
But overambition and sloppy writing ruined the show. It started off really well but quickly went downhill as the show abandoned it carefully planned and methodical world building for extensive flashbacks and MASSIVE expo dumps. The series ends up losing its identity. I think what sums up this show was my reaction to the last episode. I wanted to enjoy it. I wanted to be happy. I wanted to smile at

the happy ending everyone got (And I mean everyone) I wanted to well up with tears at the very end with the tree scene.
But I wasn't any of those things. And that is because the series didn't make me feel like the ending was earned. There was no sacrifice, no loss. Nothing of value was given up to give the characters their happy ending. So the ending just felt hollow.
Overall Darling in the FranXX should be viewed as a cautionary tale as a "What not to do when telling a story!" Because it gives us a good premise with fantastic characters and superb action before throwing it all away for a poorly written and even more poorly executed love story.
