I really tried my best to give this show a chance watch through 4 episodes but in turn I got maybe one of the blandest shows this season.
The main problem right off the bat are the 2 main characters which have absolutely 0 chemistry outside the fabricated "romance" sections. Why do I say that? Let's talk about the leads.
Shiraishi is a good guy and "invisible". Oh not to forget for some reason he is also as dense as a brick. Its pretty hard for me to really talk about him since there is just no substance to him at all. Most of the "jokes"
...
rely on him being invisible to everyone but a few select people. I won't knock the show on that because maybe there really is a reason why. I doubt its gonna be a good reason but just ignore it for now.
This "joke" of him being invisible already runs dry the first episode in but it doesn't care. Whenever you don't know what to write, write about a situation that doesn't make any sense and act like its a joke. Make sure to let the viewer know he is invisible every time.
Lets take the situation in episode 4 with the different length socks:
So he was wearing different length socks. But guess what? Nobody notices him because he is invisible! Hilarious...
It also leads to a situation that really had me scratch my head. So kubo, our female main character in this friendship if you can call it that was tasked to put up a notice on the board at the back of the class. She tries to put it up but is too small even though she just could have put it 5 cm lower. That leads to her asking her friend shiraishi to help but he is afraid because of his socks, remember? She tells him it doesn't matter and gets on a chair so we can play a "pervert" scene involving her tights so she can "tease" him about it.
The main issue here is generally it feels a general lack of direction within scenes. So they grasp at anything possible just to stretch out any given scenario because its too short. This problem stems from another problem which is:
Kubo has to do everything in these interactions. She has to initiate, she has to keep conversations going, she is crafting almost all of the scenarios and there is almost nothing to take some weight of her as a character. You can tell how hard they have it working with these 2 characters that are devoid of any personality and couldn't be any different while taking up most of the screentime. Exploring something beyond the most basic interaction is impossible if you don't have any charactertraits to work with. So almost all of the scenes feel like copies of each other and you can read them from a mile away. And that is where you can easily lose the interest of the viewer.
But don't worry we can do our special move: Fluff!
What these type of shows like to do is cover everything in "wholesomeness" and "fluff" to compensate for any depth of characters. Who is gonna knock a show about its wholesomeness?!? Make everything cute and watch the fans melt away! Has always worked and always will.
However no matter how much sugar you try to cover a pile of garbage with its still gonna taste like a pile of garbage.
At the end of the day these "teasing" shows work if the teaser and the person getting teased work together. The ironic thing is the show has some decent scenes in there but they all involve kubos sister. The scene in the store where she caught him reading "a book he wasn't supposed to" was actually funny. His monotone delivery of his logical explanation and her reading him like a book was great. I wished there was more of that. Her completely exaggerating telling her story reflects what people in real life do and was like a cherry on top.
Another one was where they were baking cookies. She was teasing her about it but at the same time showed she cared about her sister. You don't need much more complex characters than that to make them believable and fun to watch but it seems like they forgot about that with the 2 main characters.
I am always gonna be excited for shows like these because when they work they are a joy to watch but sadly this one didn't quite hit the mark.
5/10 from me. Fine to watch but not something I would actively look forward to watching
