For someone that didn't play the game, this anime was quite enjoyable. I had some trouble understanding what was going on in the beginning because I got thrown into this world without knowing anything about it. In my opinion, the first few episodes are very slow and nothing extremely plot heavy happens, but after encountering the humanoid robots led by Pascal the things get more and more fascinating.I liked the philosophical concepts about being human and at what someone or something because human. This anime contains a lot of Christian references, which should symbolize the creation of a new "more" intelligent life form than humans.

During the story we learn that even androids, that are forbidden to have emotions, show some human emotions even though they strictly try to avoid it (like we saw in the case of 2B). The result being that being human means having emotions. Those philosophical questions aren't something new or special, but I found the way the got presented quite interesting and easily enjoyable even if you are not in the mood to watch something with deep meaning. The enjoyment gets backed up by the kinda unique fighting scenes, with a lot of camera switches. Overall, the story was a little predictable, but the way certain things got treated were quite to my liking. Some questions or started plot points aren't fully explained or dropped later, which was a bit annoying. An example for that would be the “betrayal” of the missing android 2B and 9S encounter. I am not sure if that will get picked up again or not, but the ending to that storyline felt abrupt. The characters besides 2B and 9S are mostly forgettable, because they all are kinda the same. Like the control center are just people following orders like machines and the rebel forces are just your average rebel forces. This gets backed by them also not getting a lot of screen time, which isn't too bad, but still some minus points. Some other critic is that the pacing feels a lot like playing a souls game, it's like getting thrown from one boss fight to another, which was fun to watch, but the story suffered quite a bit because of it. About the graphics: I was a bit skeptical after the first episode, because there was a lot of terrible CGI, but the use of CGI gets less with the anime moving forward. Even though there is still some CGI and looks a bit out of place from time to time, it still is acceptable. The general, the art style is neither bad nor good. Overall, I would recommend watching this anime if you would like to see some cool fighting scenes and maybe think a bit about what it means to be human. But don't expect anything highly creative, very well-written or outstanding in other ways.
