Both series have similar aspects in both the story and the characters. As for the characters, they happen to be five friends who become magical girls and also uses the same variety of colors for the costumes. As for the story itself, in both series is approaching the end of the world, the enemies are controversial as to which side they really are and the protagonists become magical girls thanks to an alien. If you liked Houkago no Pleiades, you will like Madoka as it seems the most developed and dramatic version of a similar story.
