Overall I was surprised to be enjoyed as much as I was with this ancient movie. The visuals and audio were quite behind the times, but the amazing story by Tezuka helps pull it through to be an overall enjoyable experience. I contemplated writing a full English review, but since I cannot find any subtitled, much less dubbed, releases of this movie I didn't think it was necessary. Further, I do not really recommend watching this movie as it cuts out some of my favorite portions of the manga, and also loses much of the unique, expressive and detailed Tezuka artstyle that made it famous
...
in the first place.

GaruPan. is. Back.
This is quite obviously a 6 part OVA series. Think, Garden of Sinners movie 1 or Gundam Unicorn OVA 1. Much like those two, das finale OVA1 has plenty of hype scenes and a small conflict that is resolved. However much of the runtime is used to setup the tournament that is to unfold in the coming episodes as well as introduce some cool new characters both for Ooatari Joshi and the opponent of the day: UC Academy. UC Academy is a French school and their entire gimmick is a split down the middle modeling the French Revolution.
Now plenty of people are probably
...
excited for the visuals and audio quality, as GaruPan has pushed those barriers strongly with der Film. And what can I say, it isn't even close: das Finale has raised the bar again and it is so much better than both the TV ver and der Film. The audio is actually modeled in surround as well so it may be awkward for headphone users. I highly recommend a good home theater setup to get the greatest enjoyment.
And well, that's all that there is to say since talking about the plot of a sub hour OVA really isn't useful. Just go watch it! Issa good.

Some of the most tender and romantic moments in life can be super simple and straightforward. No need for grand narratives or spectacular environments, Honobono log is a celebration of these little nuggets of happiness that you or I may stumble across in our lives.
But before going any further I have to ask if you have seen this anime yet. This is not because there are any spoilers or anything like that in my post, but because you most likely could have finished an entire feels-good episode by the time you read through this review. You see, as something that was originally designed to fill
...
the white space between programs on NHK TV, Honobono episodes are insanely short at 2 minutes flat. This post is 405 words long, and with a leisurely reading speed of 200 words per minute you'd spend almost exactly 2 min reading till the end.
Uniquely among anime about love, Honobono doesn't cover the initial meeting of the individuals, but the daily interactions people go through within well established relationships. These range from happy little chats while on a date, to a daughter's confusion as her father accidentally eats her candy, to even the silence exchange as a best friend comes to console a girl's recent breakup. 10 episodes cover 10 different pairs of people in their unique heartwarming situations.
As a super low budget production, Honobono's aesthetic stays simple throughout with simple flat character motion and backgrounds. The messages instead are conveyed mostly though the VAs vocal performances and subtle expression changes on the characters faces. This is an interesting reminder of how intricate sakuga or fluid changes in the evironment are not the only ways the anime medium we love can express its core message.
All of this is presented along with the comfiest OP, OST, and ED. As is fitting of the simple nature of this show, all three roles are basically played by [a single mellow song](https://soundcloud.com/re-codes/morning-ame-no-parade-honobono-log-op). The regular lyrical version for the OP, a humming variation for the OST, and an instrumental section for the ED.
So now I hope that I have convinced you to spare a couple minutes or so to check out this anime. Sadly, there have been no International licenses that I know of, but NHK, the owner TV station and studio, have not taken any copyright action towards the complete copies available on Youtube, so please look it up there.

The recent Reddit drama has brought to light one of the most heated debates concerning the anime community: censorship. What should be considered obscene? What should be keep away from out kids? How should we implement filters to enforce our rules? Shimoneta is a satirical depiction of a Japan that has taken this to the extreme. As the OP narrates before every episode:
"A few decades have passed since the use of indecent words and phrases, in both public and private, have become prohibited throughout Japan.
Thanks to relentless legislation and the introduction of the PM surveillance system, Japan attained its status as
...
the nation with the most pristine public morals in the world.
This is a story about a group of boys and girls fighting to overthrow this boring world where the concept of dirty jokes does not exist."
***The backdrop might be serious. The anime is not***
Reddit censoring, Japan's censoring, all of that is serious business and Shimoneta does indeed cover this. But the manner in which it is all carried out is anything but. The setting for the anime is a near future Japan, where all citizens are forced to wear [PM collars](https://imgur.com/3cVYyNj) that also act as [wearable computers.](https://imgur.com/PBtoWkp) Due to absolute and complete censorship of NSFW material by the government, nobody in the highschool setting is aware of sex jokes or even the concept of sex. This leads to a bizarre situation where students act more bizarrely towards the idea of sex than normal people did before the ban. Quite the setting for a comedy.
This bizarreness is best represented in the character of [Anna.](http://i.imgur.com/WxqQEcL.png) As the head of the student council and the daughter of the politician pushing for stricter censorship laws she should be the purest character in the entire anime. However, as she has no knowledge of how to act on her desires [she turns into a sexually aggressive monster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa9zkPY4IAY) all while still maintaining the purest of intentions.
***To fix this broken world***
A common criticism towards this anime is the abundance of 'reverse' rape situations where President Anna sexually assaults the MC. An important point to keep in mind though is that the anime never condones these advances nor does it paint it in a good light.
This is where the main characters of this anime are brought in. The story follows [Okuma Tanukichi](https://imgur.com/cWn8HPq) and the anti-censorship terrorist organization on grounds: S.O.X (**S**ex happens most **O**ften on **X**mas), led by the [charismatic 'Blue Snow'](https://imgur.com/h5KP3N2). Their goal is to show off to the world how oppressed everyone in this world is, and to fight for the rights of those who enjoy NSFW material. All this while armed solely with sex jokes and a few porn magazines left over from before the censorship days. Their mission is to protest loudly and to distribute knowledge to those who have been too brainwashed so not to allow monsters like Anna to be created.
***What are we censoring? A little serious thought.***
In the end, the world of Shimoneta will never actually happen. But it is also interesting to look into what it has to say about our world. What are we censoring, and for what purpose? Some things are NSFW and should always be tagged as such, but would the world truly be a better place if nobody had access to them at all times? While thinking about the children, are we inadvertently going to craft our own Annas who wouldn't know how to act when faced with their own desires?
But on the other side of the token, The PM system ***has*** reduced crime and improved neo-Japan's reputation is a pristine and low crime nation. If a country right now was promised similar results by implementing the PM system, would it not make sense for them to take up that offer?
This analogy becomes even more interesting as it is applied to websites like Reddit. As the 7th most popular website on the internet with no age limit it has a reputation and userbase to worry about. And unlike with nations, it won't really be restricting users freedoms with any censorship rules as those affected can effortlessly switch to other platforms. At this point a slightly controversial censor to vastly improve image almost sounds like a nobrainer.
***A vision of hope, and back to the fun***
This unanswerable debate is part of the reason that even by the end of the anime, neither side has a comprehensive victory. The anime does not try to answer the question of which side is correct, but is content at celebrating the Perorists' struggles for our fetishes and lewd animu. And we as an audience don't have to actively join the fight, but can be happy that there are those who will stand up for our hobbies.
To close off this [WT!] I'll leave two of this anime's most famous and enjoyable assets: [The hilariously retro and epic Opening theme](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syoV9y_s00M) and the [insanely catchy Ending theme](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXoD8ppN3Rs)

THAT was a fun film! At this point the movie had a lot of hype to live up to and IMO it delivers. In short, it was super fun, packed with action, very well paced, and had a pretty decent story. It is also one of the only sequel style anime films I actually enjoyed. The only other one I remember being the Haruhi movie.
Honestly going in I was really scared as it immediately went down the same dark road for which I remember a bunch of bad sequel films: it introduced a tough demeanor genius antagonist loli. Thankfully, this was a red herring and
...
it didn't go down the overplayed daddy issues, understanding with MC, "she's just a little child after all" excuse of a story. In fact, the movie had a completely other mechanic to induce drama that needs no discussion other than to say it did the job well. The loli merely served as a powerful and competent adversary that needed to be overcome, and I cannot thank the movie enough for this.
The TV episodes were over the top nerdy and well researched to a level I had no seen before, and the movie delivers yet again in this respect. The sound design seems to have been updated beyond the TV's already stellar levels and I understand the noise memes that bombarded me before starting. It was beautiful. As an engineering nut and a mecha anime fan I really enjoyed everything about this but honestly I don't want to get too far in this time. War tech is a huge world I have no knowledge of and I probably missed a vast majority of the technicalities and trying to tackle them right now would be a foolish battle. Maybe I'll reserve that to increase rewatch factor in the future.
Now I want to talk about the level of polish inherent of it being an anime film. For most movies this aspect is fairly obvious and also arguably unnecessary. Lots of fluid motion and epic panning shots that are frankly distracting more than anything. However as with any good mecha, none of the staff's talent was put to waste here. The detail, fluidity, and polish were all focused on the machines, and every last bit helped elevate the experience for me. Oh and instrumental BGM remixes of everyone's favorite songs like Enter Enter Mission and Katyusha? #Blessed.
And finally, I must address the film's greatest strength: the fun and action. When trying to describe how it pulls it off so well I cannot avoid comparing it to Gundam Build Fighters, another series I praise to the moon for the same virtues. Both stories are based on war with the negatives removed, leaving behind the juicy adrenaline packed fun. And much like with Build Fighters, GaruPan emphasizes the thrill behind crafting intricate strategies based on the machines' strengths and weaknesses, and watching how they must change as fighters dip out little by little. Der Film actually takes this a step futher, de-emphasizing the individual to almost an extreme level and having almost all the battles be a combination play of the group. Skill and adaptability greatly overshadowing individual power... this is what I had been craving after the disappointing 'competition' stories of HeroAca Season 2 and Shokugeki RdC.
But at the same time, GuPdF's greatest strength also leads to its greatest flaw. The hilarious dialogue that peppers the combat became downright overwhelming at times, especially near the end. In the TV it was relatively easy to understand as the battles were spread out with few players. But with the film's 60 tank lineup it was impossible to tell who was screaming and for what reason. Most of the time it was useless banter, but it also served as how improptu strategies were made and explained, so some scenes ended up just feeling like exploding set pieces with no traceable logic.
So how would I rate this movie? Very highly. Just as good as the series for sure, with all the added polish further elevating the experience. It certainly cements GaruPan as my favorite CGDCT franchise, mostly due to a slight difference in how it tackles that formula. Focus on letting the girls do the things well and cuteness will naturally follow. And this cuteness will be unique and tangible in a way that no amount of forced yuri overtones and gap moe cuts could hope to match. I can't wait for what Das Finale has in stock. Bis später, Panzer vor!

8/10 will not recommend.
What a fantastic movie. This is exactly what I was craving in Yowamushi Pedal Season 2. There's no need to create superpower artificial emotion since the sport by nature is such a rollercoaster of hope, despair, and fortunes that change within seconds. Road bike racing is such a dramatic event because so many people are vying for victory, bargaining back and forth in game theory. It doesn't take much to explain these transactions and how they can conform to the strengths of each rider and team. This movie is easily able to introduce the riders Bezal, Zamenhoff, Ciocci, Benengeli, and Gilmore as
...
potential victory hunters and how their ideal strategies clash with one another as the finish line grows closer and closer. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about general cycling layout and strategy. They do not explain the strategy of peloton vs breakaway, winds/echelon formation, team sponsor politics, and stage vs overall victory. Thus it's made for already existing cycling fans and is quite unwelcoming to newbies.
Pros
- In 45 min it fits a full cycling story and a family story
- Does a great job at showcasing the drama and unpredictability of racing
Cons
- Doesn't explain shit to newcomers to the sport (should have been a TV series not a shortish movie)
- Very classic presentation. It's from 2003 but feels like from the 90s. Would prefer the hype and voice acting of modern anime.
