Ok, to first get some things out of the way, I have been a webtoon reader for a while now, so I am well aware of where the story is headed, I have been through the slow start, because I will be honest the first season is just a PROLOGUE, it is setting the story to be what it is and even then it only scratches the surface. Also 13 episode prologue is not big compared to other shows like Vinland Saga which is 26 episodes of just Prologue.
However, I wish I could give the anime adaptation a 10, but it skipped and omitted so

many things, dialogue that made season 1 what it was, and what added deepth to the philosophies that made me love the prologue of this story. They also skipped some of the details of world building that are important in season 2. Bam's character was also somewhat changed, in the webtoon we got to hear his thoughts, which made him more than one-dimensional unlike here in the anime. We also saw more character development than on this adaptation. Khun's character was also changed and his story with his sister Maria was overused. Now the main reason I decided to write this is because of the review by RebelPanda which is hypocritical, here is why.
*SPOILERS BELOW*
They mention that they won't talk about the webtoon, that they will only review the anime season, yet they mention the blog posts by the author?where do those fit in a review for an anime? This person is using it as a means to point out (according to them) and critize the author's "lack" of writing. Because according to this person, he can't write that information in the story that he has to write it on a blog. Let me clear that up, like I mentioned before I have been reading the webtoon for some years now, and it wasn't until my recent re-read that I began reading the blogs and in no way during my first reading experience did I feel like I was missing anything. Yes, they are filled with cool facts, and little information, but in general that information has been added to the story eventually as it has progressed. The information in the webtoon is revealed at the points where it has to, it is well timed.
Bam's and Rachel's relationship is NOT a romantic relationship, let's get that out of the way. Bam is NOT a simp. Rachel found him, clothed him, taught him how to read, write, and also brainwashed him (honestly no better word than this for the relationship they actually had) Bam's character makes sense in that aspect, the way he follows her, the way he is so devoted to her and doesn't want to lose her. He knew nobody other than her, his whole world revolved around her, also it is never said explicitly that he had amnesia in the anime, that word is not used, he simply didn't know who he was and why he was in the cave and yes those two things are mutually exclusive. Can his devotion for her become annoying at points? yeah, I admit that the first time I read the story I also found that part frustrating, but it is important to Bam's character and to his development.
I can say that Bam has one of the best character developments I have read in a story. It's just satisfying to see him grow and learn throughout the years, here in season 1 you could say he is a baby, he is barely learning about the world, he is taking his first steps. If you want an MC that is badass from the beginning then TOG is not for you, this is a slowburn series. I personally admire the writer for taking the risk and developing his character this way, he could have lost readers because of this but he took the risk and the payoff is worth it.
Bam is presented with the Black March at the beginning of the series but not because the princess is 'bored" but because she knows he is an irregular and irregulars are known to bring change to the tower, she is a free spirit but she is not satisfied with the way politics currently work inside the tower. We are told that princesses are known as "the shoes in the King's display" being a princess brings you power, but it also leads to a very restricted way of living. Princesses cannot fall in love, they cannot bear children, and are simply a symbol of prestige to their corresponding families. Also the anime skipped a scene that showed why she was there at the time Bam came into the tower, keep in mind that it takes a while to move between floors, and this is shown in the anime. Yuri has to go up only one floor and it takes her weeks to do it in the anime. Also she doesn't appear when it is "convenient" for the plot, throughout the season she is shown and it is mentioned that she is making her way to the floor of tests. One thing to understand about TOG is that everything happens the way it happens because it is meant to be, destiny, the future and choices are a recurring theme in this story. You have characters known as "Guides" that have the ability to see "paths" and change the future.
The Black March didn't lend Bam her power simply because he was "cute" in the webtoon (yes I will bring the webtoon into this because that person specifically mentions the author) she and Bam have an exchange, she asks him what he desires, does he desire, power?, wealth?, recognition? and he answers that he doesn't care for any of that he simply wants to find the most important person to him, Rachel. This peaks her interest because it is an unusual response, a respond that she hasn't heard before. Also in the webtoon the Black March's design is that of a teenager not an older woman like in the anime.
Bam in the anime already knew she was Rachel since after the crown game. When he wakes up he goes to her door and hesitates to talk to her, he even questions why she is avoiding him. So yes Bam is not stupid and completely sees through her "lazy disguise" he just decides to leave her alone for the time being, mainly because he wants to get stronger as he thinks this is the reason she is avoiding him. He simply doesn't want to be a burden to her and is aware he is not the strongest to protect her or take her up the tower. Another thing Bam and Rachel are not in the same class in the anime, Bam is a wavecontroller and Rachel is a Lightbearer, different postions, different teachers and different classes. (what the hell was this guy watching?)
Also RebelPanda guy, got the backstory of Khun wrong. In the anime it is stated that he betrayed his family, which is why he was banished, and he himself was betrayed by his half sister Maria. Guy was obviously not paying attention. Also the Maria story is explained in season 1 of the webtoon, the author didn't have to be "kind enough to blog and fill in the blanks" unfortunately the anime simply skipped it, but if you are curious it was supposed to happen when chibi Rak went into Khun's room for the first time.
Guns exist in this world but are fired using shinsu, also there was a gun in episode 2, was this person even paying attention? Khun stole the briefcase before he was banished, he was banished with nothing, do you think he would have, had money to buy a gun?
Characters do not monologue their backstories out of nowhere, Khun never mentions his backstory to Rak and Bam (at least in the anime, he does mention it to Rak in the webtoon but it there is a reason behind why he decides to tell him), Anaak only does it when she is having an exchange with Endorsi, Serena does it when she is talking to Hoh, and Hoh in a breaking moment when he has reached his limit mentally. The moments are not random.
It's really a reach and slander I should say to claim that the reason the King's predujice towards woman are not challenged by the author because he shares them as well. Like wth? I am a woman and let me tell you, this author is very respectful to his female character, they are not used mainly for fanservice (fanservice is almost non existent in this story) this story has some of the strongest female characters I have seen presented in media. The tower is full of badass independent woman. Also the King is presented as a sh*tty person with sh*tty rules from the get go.
Some cultural context, people in Korea are obsessed with appeareances, you have to include a picture in your resume and more often than not people are hired mostly for their looks. This I would say it's more of a criticism for his society, keep in mind that this story was mainly written for Korean audiences. This Panda guy wrote utter BS..
The Tower is a huge world, some civilizations aren't even aware that they are in a tower or that a King rules them, the designs and fashions are different because they come from different places, different cultures, species, ect.
I feel like the humor was better at places in the webtoon, I personally couldn't stand the scenes of Rak and the chocolate bars (which btw never happened in the webtoon) those scenes weren't humorous and they took over the time that could have been used to actually mention important information. Some of the fighting animation felt without weight, and the choreographies left things to be desired. I was excited to see some of the fights being portrayed in animation, because they were exciting when I was reading it and I was disappointed.
Overall it was a descent adaptation, an introduction for people who are new to the story. This is a series that has been ongoing for 10 years, and the author has been planning the story for even longer than that. He began publishing it online as a written work, mainly about the world outside the Tower a world he called Talse Uzer, which is also the universe Tower of God takes place in, the webtoon has garnished a total of 4.5 billion views worldwide, and it had an adaptation long coming and deserved. This is a story that requires commitment, it will most likely have a long run, comparable to One Piece, and this is just the beginning of its adaptation...
