Do it Yourself is an anime that has a really good atmosphere, that could’ve been used in another anime. This is also my first ever review on the site so sorry in advanced if it’s bad
The basic plot synopsis for this anime is a clumsy (on dangerous levels) girl who somehow messes up everything she does in the worst and most painful ways. Painful for her and the viewer. It genuinely hurts to watch her get hurt and not in a cute way, you just frown upon her. Anyways back to the synopsis. They are in this extremely high tech world while our main

girl is busy riding a bike. Her childhood friend and her were separated apart with time and Yua Serufu (our main girl) wants to build a bench that used to be in their garden. She joins a DIY (Do it Yua Serufu, stupid joke I know) and meets a bunch of other people in the club. Pretty basic plot but I have a few questions
This show was made as a comfort show, something to watch while you drink your tea at 8am in the morning. But some of it feels unoriginal and boring even though it is. One thing I said earlier is that the world they are set in is great but they never use it in smart and original ways. It almost feels like a sidenote when it should be centre stage. Also most people in this show say “why do you do DIY in an age of this tech” and I actually agree with that. I would personally get more joy out of using tech to do something cool rather than doing it myself. 2 strong contrasts could work but they always distance themselves from one of them
I also mentioned our character lineup, the most generic and basic cast possible. A clumsy girl to have in a club, pretty sure we’ve seen that before. A shy and cute girl, yep. Always. An American tsundere, okay maybe not this one. But other than that, the character lineup is generic and boring to watch. They never do anything interesting or special between each other either. It always gravitates the episode to either Serufu or some random girl and makes everyone else a background character. Also a little pet peeve but why does everyone look like a 6 year old, they’re in high school.
I had pretty high hopes for this anime, the prospect of cute girls doing woodwork was great and sounded fun. My expectations were high and while watching the episode, I audibly said “is that it?” The episode (and the entire anime) isn’t bad. I just feel like it never lived up to my expectations. You could say that I was aiming too high with mine but I literally forgot about this anime and only just realised it was on my MAL list and airing, They weren’t too high to begin with. One anime that did have the same expectations as this one was Bocchi the Rock. Everyone go watch that instead
So my final verdict of this anime. Just your everyday slice of life with a concept that is meant to draw you in but never delivers on that. 6/10
