If you are hesitating to watch this anime, just realise that it developped in me the same addiction that happened with animes like Steins Gate where mystery and possibilities make you crave to see the next episode and the outcome.
It is the first Time I ever go to the lenght of writing a Review in English by the way. I have seen a really high number of anime, most of the one existing, that is why I pass my time looking for animes, and at first glance this anime didn't alert my radar. I'm usually more a fan of action anime and I find horror
...
based and drama based animes rather boring, even though I watch them at the end since I have nothing else to watch. Then abandon them at the second episode.
That is clearly not what happened.
Concerning the Story :
Like most of the people here I believe, I was surprisingly hooked to Shinsekai yori. The way the information is brought to the watcher in sequences, makes it really easy to aprehend even though certain aspects may seem a bit confusing at first or too heavy to directly grasp, with a part of guessing and a part of mistery you manage to square what's happening. The characters, sounds, art and dark athmosphere makes it really easy to get in the boat and journee in this raw distopic world.
Nothing told seems unconceivable making the immersion easier and as the background is rigorously set, you can extend it in many rational questions that are most of the time answered at some point. The ending is really acceptable in this optic.
Concerning the Art :
The quality of the drawing is not exeptional maybe even lacking sometimes, but, the originality of it and the rawness convey strong tension and feelings, the deepness of the drawing is increased at the right moment to immerse the watcher in the characters state of mind whatever they are.
The anime is not an emotional lift but it still manage to catch you and bring you down or up at the right moment.
Concerning the Sound :
The anime is really spirit oriented and the soundtracks are really emotional/spiritual sometimes even more than the drawings, there are some recurrent songs that take different meanings as the anime proceed, and, they are the songs that have the biggest impact.
Concerning the Characters :
I'd say the story is told as an auto-biography , that's why I consider the characters' developpement and deepnesses part of the story-line, they are not some parallel pawns that advertise us, each one of them and their background participate in making the story line progress all along, they clearly all have a role and we don't feel like time or concentration is being wasted except at certain moments where repetitive flash-backs can become boresome and slow somehow.
I don't know if I really enjoyed the anime it is not an happy story, you don't have fun watching the anime but it was really interesting, really addicting, as the background and characters are brought with a great rationality and darkness around them that feed the mistery.
I recommend it to anyone as it is not my kind of anime but the immersiv vibe still caught me and I voluntarily let myself transported till the 25th episode.
