Before I go off on one with this movie, it's beautifully animated. The team who worked on this deserve all the praise on the visual front here. Character designs on both the people and the animals were all top notch, so no complaints there.
The problems come more so with the rest of the movie, mainly with the characters. Most of them are actual pricks, fitting coming from the setting being a stuffy department store. It's a thankless job, as this movie is 70 minutes of watching our main lead Akino trying her damnest to please the most uptight and unlikeable pompous animals put to
...
film, the seal in particular can fuck right off. They all have ridiculous amounts of money which means they have the right to treat her like a pet.
Worse is the upper management she has to deal with. They clearly didn't train her properly. She gets one quick piece of advice from her boss at the start of the movie before he peaces out and while they treat it like he gave her this big advantage, really it's the most basic and obvious help the customer when they need it advice. She's not even fully got the job yet but they're already looking to downsize and give her the axe, like why did you even hire her in the first place then?
The worst is Tokiwa, this ugly brute dude with a football shaped head who while the main lead has just been screamed at by a customer and taking a minute for herself to cry in private, is told by this prick "While you were busy dealing with this customer screaming at you who pulled you by the neck and started being horrific, you weren't thinking about all the other customers around you, you really don't suit this job." Like bro, she's still new. Also, your a horrible human being, then he just pisses off for the rest of the movie.
The main leads job should be selling products, but she's instead put through the ringer. One animal wants to buy something with just a single coin, in a goddamn highend department store. Another wants a super specific perfume that's no longer sold, who attempts suicide because of it, another needs help proposing by using a melting ice sculpture because he's too scared to ask normally. Like c'mon, just grow a pair, these are all rich people problems.
All of these things end up making the movie feel very mean spirited. You feel super bad for the main lead who has to deal with all this bullshit. It makes the moments at the end when the animals she helped start thanking her feel unearned and forced. Other than that, there's no real plot, it's just kinda one thing after the other. That in itself isn't bad, but the movie can be rather boring. I can't stand these characters and there's no real stakes in any of their plots, so it was a struggle to pay attention and get through this one, even with the short 70 minute runtime.
