Do you understand what is comedy? Do you really value it? I am very sure you don't, not until you watch Dogs and Scissors. It is a series that will make you appreciate jokes, more than ever, because its pathetic, dreadful, and fan-service accompanied "comedic" plot will make you appreciate the math joke that you thought was stupid.
The plot is simple..you can read the summary anywhere, so I am not going to detail that. But yes, this is an extreme story of books..where you either write or die..you read or die. That was the opening sentence of the anime. Quite interesting right? Yeah,
...
I wish it was like that. Not until you pass episode 2, when you will suddenly realize the deep, thoughtful ways of this anime, thoughtful ways of putting fan-service. This anime is a collection of "weird" otaku fetish: sadistic tsundere, extremely attached younger sister, voluptuous masochist, and most importantly, a complete harem of girls. Not to mention the "flat-chest" jokes, "those" dialogues....and whatever a loner otaku dreams to see.
At first it begins decently, guy loves books, he dies, and gets reincarnated as a dog to become the pet of his favorite author. And then starts the non-stop loop of "flat-chested" jokes, sadistic scissor scenes, younger sister pleading "Kazu-nii", girls appearing to satisfy harems and ends with hot-spring bath and beach scene near the ending of the anime. This anime, without a doubt, will satisfy if you're into "these" things.
Characters are simple. Protagonist is a straight-man (or dog) of the series, who gives commentary to every line spoken. He loves book more than anything. He is mostly in his dog form. The female lead (the scissor) is a 20 year old sadistic, flat-chested (where the jokes come from), tsundere and best-selling author, who although highly intelligent, limits her insults to "perverted dog" "ero dog" "idiot" and "mongrel"....yes, very intelligent insults she uses.
Side characters include overly-attached imouto; a bookstore girl the protagonist loves;her younger sister who likes to "play" with the protagonist; a voluptuous and masochistic book editor; a maid who is overly attached to her mistress; a "shining" idol who is supported by overly attached men in black; and the girl who is always apologizing...and for comic relief afro guy, muscle men and whatever the anime industry needs to create comedy.
Sound tracks are average. Opening song, you know those songs where the singer changes pitches as she sings..with hyperactive attitude? Ending is rather decent, after first ten seconds. And overall, very decent, low-average music.
Art. Average 2013 art. Animation is decent, the fight scenes are alright. It' just nothing to look forward to. And it's sad how every character must have colorful eyes and hair, certain types of figure and stereotypical appearance.
Overall, I began this anime because of how frequently it was recommended. This anime was made TO satisfy the audience, especially the guy stuck in his room 24/7. There are plot holes everywhere, non-sense characters and low average art and animation. It just takes pathetic on different level. I didn't enjoy it.
Recommended only if you're interested in "those" matters I mentioned, or just want to watch every anime of the season. Otherwise, just save your time on something better. Seriously, I cried realizing the depth anime reached these days.

Sometimes there will be shows that will make you laugh and cry. Sometimes the shows will raise realistic questions, and sometimes shows will leave a bitter scar in your heart. Shounen genre is the champion of genre when it comes to long running, and it is infamous for its action, and known for exploring an interesting specific topic, whether it is ninja, samurai, pirates or shinigami. Most shounen develope from the Japanese myths and culture, while some (recently even more) decides to tell the story of distant land. Fairy Tail is one of the rare shounens that tells the story of magic, set in more
...
of European style with guilds and magicians and mage and magic with theme of "friendship" and "victory".
The most reputable part of the series is its music. Sountracks are top-notch, opening and ending songs are high quality and voice acting is decent. For most and any shounen, this trait is same. Fancy opening to uplift the mood with calmer endings, accompanied by some better soundtracks, music definitely is a strong point of the show. But how many people watches the show for music?
To put it simply, Fairy Tail is about a magic guild called "Fairy Tail". The story begins when Lucy Heartfilia joins this guild and finds how welcoming, fun, anti-evil, powerful, and loving it is and together, they take on missions, and fights other evil guilds. (does it remind you of a ninja village from some show?)
Originality is not present in this show. Everything is recycled, reused and replaced from every other shounen presented before. Lacking originality isn't bad, infact many great series weren't as original, but what Fairy Tail lacks is a genuine delivery and attention to details. Clichés can form a decent story if used correctly, however, eveything was thrown out in the stage, "we must protect" "we always win" "we are friends", lengthy dialouges of why friendship is imortant all are thrown out there, and that is what grabs the attention of sleeping audience. There is no form of suspense, everything is predictable, dialouges are from the third-grade diary, protagonists are typical and not to mention the Dragon Ball complex, you know, fight enemy then make them friends, is present in this shounen too.
Protagonists are loud, seen as patriots (as every other typical shounen), girls are for some unknown reasons portrayed as either absurdly strong and obnoxious or extremely helpless, and villains are agian, your recylced evil guys doing things with no ulterior purpose. There wasn't any development but more like a boost change in personality. One time they are bad and next episode, poof, they are good guy. The change is like skipping steps and can't be called development, more like sudden changes to characters. One time the character is weak and the next scene they somehow are the strongest character with power with unsatisfying explanation.
The most significant things, which applies to most audience, is the character art. Gray stripping, nicely drawn out "cool" guys, and EVERY SINGLE FEMALE has a voluptuous body with exaggerated top. However, you don't see audience complaining, because, there is fan service for both ends, sadly, we are in an era where normal figures are considered ugly and to promote story, shows draw out exaggerated body parts.
The art, beside that, is fantastic. Details are good, backgrounds are reputable, and the concept of mage and guilds are drawn fairly well. Borders are done well, and there colours are vibrant. Animation for any shounen, as always, is good too.
Fairy Tail had a little potential. Perhaps some fixing of plot, presenting some unique character could've enhanced the enjoyment. However, the show borrows so much from other shounen that you can't remember anything significant of it, beside the music. As someone who have seen One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball and some other major shounen, the similarity and lack of orginality is too obvious to enjoy. There are even major characters (Gildarts), stroy arcs that were completely taken from other series and inserted in this show, with minor changes.
Overall, I respect Hiro Mashima's ability to draw fast and draw some good scenes, but when it comes to plot I pity these pathetic plots and characters. From my perspective, Fairy Tail is like those action anime with super fan-service, except there is no nudity, but exaggerated males and females with the given explanation for fighting ends with "cuz we b frndz"
If you're into beautiul females, typical shounen, and are half-wake when watching shows, this is definitely your anime, If you want something serious, deep, and a thrilling shounen, you may run away before wasting any time.
To conclude, Fairy Tail left a bitter scar in my heart. I have wasted one summer, looking for change, unfortunately, it was pathetic.

Everything about this series is love or hate. Many believes how great and fascinating this series is, but how about the flaws many die-hard fans ignore?
To put it simply, some adapt to the world of Shingeki no Kyojin and screams "best animu evarrr" while others try to dissect the plot, and find it is a version of the likes of Claymore, or a different version of a scary zombie apocalypse.
Story: after almost facing extinction, humanity escapes to three layers of sturdy wall, saving the last of themselves from their predator, Titans. And after 107 years of this "peace", the walls are breached
...
again, where our protagonist loses his mother and swears for revenge on the Titans, as he escapes to the second layer of the three wall. Then, the story starts and the journey to killing titans begins. However, as he progresses, he finds the terrible truth and starts uncovering mysteries of his world.
Perhaps many people, when they encounter some absurd ideas, think "it's stupid" or "how did they do that, it's stupid". To you all of that kind, everything in this series is part of a dark truth.
Shingeki no Kyojin's story isn't as original as screamers think, as Claymore also had the idea of humans living in the fear of superior beings, fighting monsters with monsters and a world with dark secrets and conspiracies ages ago. However, one may view Shingeki no Kyojin as a much more intense Claymore, female knights replaced with teen soldiers and gut-eating monsters replaced with giant man-eating human-like creatures called "Titan" or "Kyojin", and walled . I can go on about how the two are similar, but I think I have showed that the idea nor the story is original as many claims.
However, the author knows his world well, too well, and the plot follows very well stitched.
Characters: again, a love-hate topic. Many finds the protagonist Eren as cry-baby, way too loud, idiotic, too hyper, and too set on revenge. Eren Jaegar is exactly like that. However, anyone who understands the feeling of seeing family members ripped apart in front of their eyes will instantly ignore these qualities Eren has and accept that his actions are natural, which it is.
Mikasa, or "Eren-fangirl" or "emotionless girl" or "weird one". That is the shortest description and a fitting one for our main female lead. Her circumstances are udnerstandable, again, given her past.
Armin or "intelligent one" or "biggrst cry-baby"
Aside from the three main protagonist, supporting characters are very well done. Some are realistic such as Jean, some are weird (Hanji), some are mysterious (Annie) and some are always yelling, some are clever (Irwin) and many who will make brief appearance and then die. There are others who I didn't mention.
Art: a VERY unique art. Yes, you either love ot or hate it. The character designs are reputable, 3D manuevar gear deisgn is excellent and well though out (don't comapre it to reality or if it is possible)..and then Titans. Yes, titans are portrayed as sloppy, and their proportions are varying, they are always naked (don't worry, no fanservice intended, they just lack reproductive organs).
BUT, the borders, or outlines are very bold, sometimes it is rather uncomfortable.
Animation: Fluid, good. However, endless recaps, flash-backs, scenes lacking backgorunds. Battle scenes are done well. The opening animations are phenomenal, where as endings are just typically animayed.
Music: Boths openings are from Link Horizon, Japanese mixed with German. One sounds like revenge and action, and another one is encouraging anthem-like song. If the opening's job was to buy views and summarize the anime, it did extremely well. Soundtracks behind the scenes are decent. They do lift the mood, but, sometimes are non-fitting.
Enjoyment: very enjoyable for me, personally. If you understand and are willing to adapt your veiws, you will scream "besto animu". However, recaps, flashbacks, some semi-annoying characters, and very bold outlines....well not so enjoyable now I think logically.
Overall: an exmaple where anime fans wil divide and argue. While the intense, entertaining non-original plot are reputable, the flaws are there. You may or may not choose to ignore it.
But in the end, it isn't disappointing, but not satisfying either. It is so similar to Claymore that I couldn't help but compare them.
