This show is exceptionally poorly written.
Usually, I'm more lenient towards shows than the general MAL userbase. So I saw this show at 6.5 or whatever and thought, hey let's give it a go. I'm very very surprised this show got as high of a rating as it did. Maybe if it were Ecchi you could excuse the terrible writing and pacing. But it's not.
That being said, I would probably give the first half of the show a 6 or so. It seemed like it was laying the groundwork for a decent show. Each character was introduced in a memorable
...
way and the setting is great. Who doesn't like magic schools right?
Well here's the issue. Very quickly you will start asking yourself, "wait did I miss something?" Because the show will seem like it jumps 5 minutes ahead without explaining how you got there. And all the groundwork sloppily laid in the first half goes to waste as the story becomes impossible to care about, the characters are completely forgettable lacking any depth, comedy is nowhere to be seen, and actual character progression gets no content. Additionally, the school itself somehow boils down to just these 5 or 6 freshmen characters being front and center in all the action, which really makes no sense. And "school" is a bit generous as if there is anything close to teaching or training in this show it must be under 1% of the content because I sure can't remember it.
So yeah, it's not the worst show I've seen, but it's a poor excuse for a show. I just can't forgive terrible writing that wastes a decent concept.

This was a really weird show. I tend to just jump into shows with little to no knowledge of what their content is, and that was the case with this one.
At first I was like, oh cool, they are kinda steam punky air ballooning around hunting dragons. Well, that feeling lasted through the first episode. Then it quickly became "why am I watching this?" After the first dragon hunt, you basically need no more action in the show for a few reasons:
1. It's repetitive
2. There is no clear reason for why the audience should care if they
...
kill another dragon.
3. No particularly interesting choreography.
So if not for action, why watch the show? What else do we have to look forward to? Let me quickly dive into these possible elements that pop into my head.
Story (plot): To put it bluntly, it's non-existent. What we have is 13 ish guys and 4 girls on an airship essentially doing the fantasy equivalent of whaling. And that's it. They have no interesting goals, there is no looming threat. They literally just are a group of whalers trying to kill these seemingly docile creatures for food and money. Not to mention none of the dragons look like dragons. They are random combinations of sea creature and reptilian features.
Characters: This, in my opinion, is the best part of the show. There are several interesting characters that you want to see interact and develop. The show is *kind of* an ensemble, but there are two standout characters that get most of the screen time and those are Mika and Takita. Unfortunately these two are pretty low on the list as far as interesting. Mika is just annoying, boring, and wants to kill dragons as much as possible because he's hungry. He's the strongest character (of the males at least) so he gets pretty much all the action scenes. But so what. Takita is way more interesting than Mika, but I still rank her only near the middle as far as characters I want to see more of go. She is good for gags and jokes though since she is the new girl on the ship. But the other characters are pretty interesting, and that really becomes the only reason to watch the show once you realize there is no plot and the action is pointless.
World Building: Not bad. It's a pretty interesting and well developed world for such a short series. But it would be far better if there was a threat or any sort of conflict at all. It's really hard to care about this peaceful utopian world thriving on the dragon trade.
Comedy: Nothing too memorable, but I know there were some moments in the first half of the show that made me smile.
Drama: Nothing.
Intellectual stimulation: Nothing really. It might be interesting if they wanted to go into the morality of what they were doing, but that wasn't the direction of the show. I will say that the final plotline that spans the last few episodes was confusing and not in a good way. It kind of presents a moral dilemma but then the answer that they come up with is nonsense.
So, overall I'd say not a great show, but has some interesting characters. I honestly spent most of the time just feeling sorry for the dragons. I feel like this show must have been written by somebody very interested in whaling and/or farming livestock because that's more or less the premise. And unless you really find it interesting to watch harmless creatures getting killed, harvested, and then cooked you may not find the premise appealing. I give it a 5 because I was able to mostly enjoy the show, despite it's problems.

I just finished this series (up to episodes 15). I have a habit of not reading any reviews of a show until I finish it. I am weird like that. So here I am absolutely blown away by this great anime, and I come to this page and see a wall of barely understandable smear reviews telling people this is a garbage show.
That is what compelled me to write this. Not liking this is fine, but this show has fine quality all around. Interesting characters, an amazing story, great sound, gripping plot progression, great choreography, good quality
...
animation. I can hardly even understand the negativity that is being thrown at it. I hope it isn't because it feels like it was made for an American audience? Are anime fans that fickle? I hope not.
Anyways, I highly recommend you guys try this series out. This is the best Netflix original I have seen since Seven Deadly Sins, although it is entirely different. I will admit to two things that are objectively bad about this show. First, the name is terrible and sets up bad expectations. The show isn't about a mask, and even the presence of masks (even in the first episode you see there is more than one mask) isn't the heart of the show. The masks help kickstart the plot THAT IS ALL. The plot itself is about a police force trying to solve a gigantic case. Also, the word hero is misleading because this show doesn't have any hallmark aspects of a show with heros. No magical elements or even any character who could be described as a hero are part of this show. The other bad element is that WE NEED ANOTHER SEASON. Sorry folks, the story ends at an interesting point that ties up several loose ends, but it can definitely go on.
So what is the number one thing that this show gets right? It's the plot. It feeds you the plot in such a logical and strategic way. You will be trying to piece together the whole crime map yourself as each episode exposes just a little more of the story. Not only that, but the show tells the story so great. The show will jump to the perspectives of brand new characters and YOU WILL START TO CARE about these characters. Even if at first you have no idea why you are even watching them.
Guys, just lay back and enjoy this show. Don't go in with any expectations, just let them take you on an intellectual adventure and enjoy the story.

I just had to add a review because of how much hate this show has gotten.
First a brief non-spoiler synopsis. Gods (from several mythologies) basically have given up their powers and come to live among mortals. Each god can form a "familia" (read: gang/guild). The world is presented as a town with a multi-floor dungeon attached. Character and enemy abilities are presented as if this were a video game, however the world is NOT set in a video game. The story follows a boy who joins (and is the only member of) the familia of the goddess Hestia. The
...
goddess is in love with him, although he kind of just ignores that fact. The story is about the boy getting a remarkable skill *exp plus/Super growth* after he gets saved from a near-death encounter with an OOP monster in the dungeon. From then you watch him grow and try to make it through the dungeon while being sabotaged by *parties you will learn about*.
I will keep this short. It's an enjoyable show. The characters are fun to watch. The world is interesting (although not fully explored) and you keep wanting to learn more about it. The main is pretty standard (gentleman, earnest, shy with his feelings, wants to get stronger), and that doesn't bother me. Several of the battle scenes are drawn very well. The comedy is light hearted and sometimes slightly perverted. There are obvious fan service shots, but not nearly as heavy as an ecchi show might be. Plus the main is pure/innocent so the show never gets lewd.
All in all it's just fun! Do you like to see a new world get explored? A main character grow and meet interesting characters along the way? Well animated action? If so, just watch this show! Ignore all the haters.
Given I'm a huge gamer so that might influence how much I enjoyed the show.
