I'm not sure if it was the awful English dub, the horrible animation, or the over sentimentality of the story that made this so painful to watch. Let's start with the dub: at times the words didn't match the mouth movements and all the voices managed to be incredibly annoying. The art was so bad, I know it was made 1979, but I've seen pretty decent animation from that decade. Know the sentiment, ugh, I just wanted to punch Judy and most of the other characters.

The storyline of this manga was everywhere and didn't make sense really. For example, the premise of the manga: the dad forces his daughter to pretend to be a boy to play basketball. Yes, it's a cute premise, but it's never fully explained and just kind of forced upon us.
Basketball is forgotten by the sixth volume. I was never really satisfied with Kyo and Chiharu's relationship. :/ A bunch of supporting characters were introduced but quickly forgotten. In fact, the only thing I truly loved about this manga was Hayama. He was hilarious and I found him endearing in the two bonus chapters about him. And ... |
