Boringly bad.
I have watched a lot a trash anime especially fantasy, I love nothing better than a power fantasy, mildly interesting premise type show to watch while I’m cooking/cleaning. However, this show is not either of those, it’s very incoherent even though it is only trying to do two things: a fantasy plot and a dramatic plot. It doesn’t do either well and doesn’t have any other redeeming qualities, it’s not even entertainingly bad, just boringly so. Here’s a list of a few of the issues I had:
- no plot, it feels like one is written in when there needs to be
...
one and it’s usually pretty boring because it’s undermined by the fact that there are no rules defining this world so its rules defining conflict are rewritten easily to suite the situation.
- overpowered MC has no personality (literally no personality-like they thought that was cool) or character development, they give him a very mysterious background and never bother defining it.
- the script is terrible, it feels like a 14 year old asked an AI to generate a power fantasy script with a bunch of cool techno vocab, and then the 14 year old proceeded to edit in more garbage because an AI can’t do it this badly
- techno babble, basically they talk all the time about the magic system and get really detailed/complex even though they haven’t defined it to the audience/in general bc they have no idea what they’re talking about. I have a degree in mathematics so my IQ is def 3000+ but not a single word about their magic system made sense (I did enjoy making fun of characters with their language tho “wow he has so many psions I bet he could destroy a rudimentary activation sequence with his toes”)
- the characters are all so boring, it’s incredible. Like if I had to live with all of those kids I would’ve toastered my bath after a week
Basically there is an entire swamp of trashy fantasy out there for you to watch don’t bother with this one.

TLDR: is a story about the journey or the destination, idk.
Basically the ending was crazy. I think objectively that it’s bad. Characters aren’t resolved, motivations change, plot points fall through etc. It feels like the author felt the pressure to subvert expectations and go where no one thought they would be they didn’t pull it off super well and it was unsatisfying. That being said there are some things I like about the ending. I don’t like that togame died, it felt rather unmotivated (if blonde chick liked togame then couldn’t she just have held her hostage and to manipulate yasuri?),
...
but the speech togame gives to yasuri as she dies was incredible, touching and very fulfilling to their characters emotions. There are a bunch of things that felt like a mess about the end but I’ll only list a few:
- All of the sudden the shogun with his 11 cronies are the big baddies although they have no prior mention/screentime.
- the main villain was set up to be hitei and she kinda is but then at the end she’s a homie with yasuri even though she killed his lover(see note from earlier)
- yasuri is consumed by sorrow/rage and goes on a spree with the intent to die but lives afterwards and is seemingly fine
There’s more as I think about it but this is just one episode (arguably one of the most important). Let’s talk about the rest of the series
The journey ( everything before ep 12)
This is a villain of the week type show with an overarching story both of which are entertaining and well done. I quite enjoyed the characters, all were very well thought out/designed, the jokes are funny and the two MCs have very good character development imo. Each episode is 45ish minutes and really has time to flush a small story out which they do. I don’t have too much to say about it other than I really liked it (the ending retroactively sours it a little).
Story 5/10
Art 10/10
Music 9/10
Animation 6/10
Characters 8/10
Ending 2/10
Overall: 7/10? Really hard to give a general score, at first I wanted to give it a 9 then I got mad and wanted to give it a 4 so I just gave it a 7 because for what it’s worth I don’t think this show deserves to be hated.

I CANT BELIEVE I CRIED ABOUT A STORY OF A MANS QUEST TO CURE HIS ED
Anyways, Rudeus is back and he has more problems than just being a degenerate this time. His degeneracy, which is still a work in progress to fix (lets ignore his fumble with that blonde chick), is replaced by more pressing matters. I was genuinely surprised by how wholesome this man became in his romance with a certain someone and the ending was awesome! Kinda crazy that this show went from an adventure to a straight romance this season. It wasn't jarring and I didn't realize the
...
shift to a slice of life romance had happened till near then end when instead of a action packed climax we got a dramatic climax. After rudeus's dramatic CLIMAX (you know what im saying) he woke up the next day and sylphie was gone and I was about to lose my mind like, if she got pulled away/committed an eris or if he got pulled away again I was going to throw my ipad across the room. But she comes back to his room a minute later and then they had a wholesome romantic moment (involving groping her and him being sprung) that somehow I felt was very heartwarming especially for rudeus after the semi betrayal (eris). Overall I loved it and it seems like the adventure will be back on in part II of this season which is awesome.

straight gas romance anime.
TLDR I think it did a lot of things really well that most school romance don't.
Pros:
It's very wholesome, it melts your heart and makes you sad because your degenerate bum won't ever be able to have a wholesome romance like the two MC's do. Basically each MC seems incredibly human and realistic, they have problems and flaws. They work well together and my favorite part is that they confide their problems to each other. The second major pro this story has is the pacing of the romance, most romance anime fall into two categories: they date
...
each other off the bat which can make the connection feel underdeveloped or they wait all season and then the MC's finally say one positive thing to the other in some sort of half confession (not gonna explain why I don't like this). This anime found a nice sweet spot of steady progression. I also think the writing was really good which helped it not be boring even though we are in one of the MC's house basically the whole time and they talk so much on his couch THE COUCH SHOULD BE LISTED AS A MAIN CHARACTER FOR ALL THE 3RD WHEELING IT DID. Finally, the music was pretty good I really like the intro and the OST was nice.
Cons:
not really a con but it's not really a comedy anime which it is tagged as such. Another con people might have is the fact that this show is basically a VN. I said this earlier but there is not much variety to the animation or scenery. I think this really kills it's re-watchability. Another con is that I don't think you can watch this show for anything besides the romance, that's all there is and it's really good but the plot isn't particularly wild, the drama isn't crazy there's not many other themes like how fruits basket has drama, fantasy, and some comedy in addition to romance. A final problem people might have is that because the romance is wholesome, it's pretty vanilla, no crazy tsundere's for you otakus.
All in all I gave it a 8/10 because I feel that what this anime does try to do it does it really well, and it let me become emotionally fulfilled through two fake characters’ love story (which is pretty nice when u still single).

TLDR: This Movie is so precious to me however I cannot recommend it to everyone because a good chunk of it's value comes from having seen and loved the original series and finally receiving closure from everyone's story.
Plot:
In classic eva fashion who even knows what is going on. The excessive use of ancient historical terms in meaningless but cool sounding sentences and funky visuals make it hard to understand, however that was never the primary purpose of eva. Eva helps us get a glimpse of what it means to be human through these characters in wildly different and similar circumstances from ours.
...
I saw so much of myself in Shinji and was similar to him in so many ways (I even play the cello) but I could tell that he was still distinct from me. Without spoiling anything the first 2 acts are fabulous, the third act goes hard in the weird realm (I'm talking end of evangelion human instrumentality part) but ends with so much resolve for the characters that it is cathartic for most fans of the original show.
Art and Animation:
There is so much incredible art and unique evangelion-style visuals, that's all there is to say in that dept. I was lucky enough to see this in theatres twice in the US which enhanced it even though that was not my first viewing experience. Now animation, the 3D was really impressive (that's rare), however there are two instances that stick out like a sore thumb and are bad, but one of them is purposefully to jolt the viewer out in the conclusion. I will say the rebuilds did a lot of rebuilding the characters look for the sake of showing they've changed and are different which is great until you get outfits like Misato's which just looks terrible imo, but that's splitting hairs.
Music:
I'm listening to the OST as I write this review, Shiro Sagisu is an amazing composer and while most of the songs are arrangements of both old evangelion -and surprisingly- kareshi kanojo no jijou songs they are done masterfully and this movie has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Shiro Sagisu's music covers choral, classical, orchestral rock, and lots of other genres while the other artists provide excellent songs that are just the cherry on top (thanks Hikaru Utada).
A Personal Note:
This movie makes me incredibly happy, I always felt that the evangelion series deeply reflected the authors (Hideaki Anno's) internal problems (He's also confirmed this) and that this movie showed how a really intense and difficult life was resolved and what was gained from it (although I struggle to put what was gained in words I feel that I understand it). Personally -I am sure this holds for most- I have had a fair share of struggles. I found and became a fan of evangelion shortly after the most difficult part of my life so far, and I wasn't really recovering because it hadn't ended. I have since grown and learned a lot from my experiences and feel that without them my life could not feel as meaningful as it is know, for this movie to come out in tandem with that makes me incredibly happy and is definitely why I personally consider this a masterpiece even though I can't recommend it to all.
Bye Bye Evangelion
