In terms of the protagonist's sexual orientation, these two series are anything but similar. But both of these shows have the same scenario. The protagonist is faced with two lover's of almost equal importance and in the end, he/she has to sacrifice one for the another. Just when you are feeling sorry for the one left out after the end of the series, you get hit with an OVA with "an alternative ending". In other words, the one who was left out in the original series gets to go out with the protagonist. So yeah, these two are pretty similar. But I'll suggest you watch Kimi ga Nozomu Eien anyway. It has a grave mood, tons of weight in every action carried out by the characters and a long lasting impression on the viewer. But what's most important- unlike most anime(popular and unpopular), this one has a decisive and satisfactory ending(which is an understatement, the ending is GREAT).

Both are otaku and slice of life themed. On a personal note, Genshiken is better than NHK Ni Youkosu.

Both have around 13 episodes! lol kidding. Both have touchy romance, they don't have stupid ecchi and they're bound to leave a long-lasting impression on your mind with the good looking characters, friendship, the love and the soundtracks. If you're a fan of teh romance genre, this one's a must-watch for you.
