Absolutely awful movie, not only the worst Ghibli I've seen but one of the worst movies I've seen from a writing perspective.
Starting off with the positives, the visuals were pretty nice, not amazingly standout against other Ghibli movies, but still good. The initial character setup was also alright, only alright but still alright.
From there it all goes off the rails as all the characters dance along like puppets on a string for one of the flattest plots I've read. They're constantly belting out lines that frankly don't make sense, and the motivations behind them are even more unclear.
I'd be inclined to agree with some
...
of the other reviews that a lot of it feels like an attempt at rehashing past Ghibli movies, and taking elements from them in a shallow way, but acting like there's more to it. Honestly the most bothersome part of it is how it seems to act like there's a lot to tell, but it's simply not conveyed at all. I recently watched The Cat Returns, another Ghibli movie, that honestly you can draw comparisons to, yet is generally a lot simpler. You know what? It managed to feel much more worth watching despite that simplicity.
This is a movie that didn't have anything worth saying but insisted on babbling on. Some parts dragged on more than necessary, and those were the better parts. The rest just rushed through hoping you wouldn't question how little the actions made sense if you get past them quick enough.
Don't watch this. If you like Ghibli, know you're in for a disappointment. If you want to start liking Ghibli, watch something like Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, or Whisper of the Heart. Even The Cat Returns or Arrietty, which are honestly a bit forgettable easily beat this movie as easy watches.
