This review contain some spoilers
Sao is one of my best anime I've watched. It was a a fantastic anime with insane music op/ed: (Courage/Ignite and Sword Lane was my favs). The art design is pretty decent nothing to add. Although a lot of people complained about the story and characters development but personally I really enjoyed them and rewatched that show a lot of times in many languages :)).
So let first talk about the characters:
Akihiko Kayaba: Presented as a genius, he created the whole Sao universe and the first VRMMORPG that ever existed. Many people wondered why he did that since it was not
...
really clear explained in the series but in my opinion he wanted to create a Utopia, a new virtual sword fantasy that people could actually enjoy but also live in as a being and die.
Kirigaya Kazuto: my favorite characters :)). The reason why he was a overpowerful character because he
he was followed "secretely" by Akihiko him self the CREATOR for broking the game lmao. Indeed he kinda got the control of Aircraft world (which others people based on to make others VRMMORPG aswell as ALFHEIM ONLINE or GUN GALE ONLINE) since he defeated the creator but also as a survivor Sao and as a winner he got all the skills needed to play others VRMMORPG easily ( 2 years training and try harding u know :D). Moreover the question is rather now why is he so much strong at the start ? The main reason still stay the fact that hes a Beater that he managed to discover the highnest floor in 2 months (beta test version period) but also bc he seized the idea of a death game and instantly believed Akihiko words before anyone else did (1st ep showed that he was reading some kind of book abt Akihikio so prob he got some idea in the head). He was the first one who reacted after that (reason why Dual Wield Swords, the unique skill for the one that got the fastest reaction was given to him) and first one who tried to finished the game. So why every single girl felt in love with him whenever they met him ? Prob bc handsome, cool, he saved ur life, a pro player that help the weak? However to explain how he was that op for no reason the story could spare an episode to tell abt example: his childhood or some events in his past that could actually motivate him but it didnt.. That is the only thing I could reproach show for. After all the protagonist evolved through the story: A young arrogant and selfish 14 years old boy to the one that actually thinks for others and he doesnt bother to sacrifice him self for others good (We can see it very well in last ep through his regard on others, his feeling of guiltiness from what he's done, many life he could have saved and he wasnt hesitate to do a gamble that he standt no chance to win again Heathcliff..). Kirito's became more mature and determinate after the event that lead his first guild teammates "Black cat" to death (and a again reason why Dual Wield Sword was given to him) I wouldn't blame him for that event since he first saved them b4 joining their guild.. It was for me an unexpected tragic event that has to happen... I would forgive him for saving 6K people afterward...
Asuna Yuuki: Asuna wasnt my 2nd fav characters (Suguha was ;)) but a well made character. Even though with cliche "princess in trouble" , a "domicile woman" but for she was a a proud woman who want to stay her self whatever the situation could be. A dynamic girl that motivate others to react (reason why she became sub leader of the strongest guild) and a kind heart woman who would risk her life to save people (ep 9 when she instant came to help when she heard screams)... Moreover the cliche for Asuna was somehow the reflect of the society and very strong culture japanese. For example: domicile women who stay at home and feed children (japanese women r independent nowadays but I believe the idea/thinking still stay/remain less or more), we got maids.... Reki Kawahara just managed to slip into some ideas about the reality facts for the show.
Synopsis:
1st Arc:
A death survivor fantasy world made by Akihiko to trap 10000 people but it isn't the only aim. Sao is not only a cruel world but aswell a world that we could live in, a fantastic world that people could really enjoy . The first person that give me that sensation was Kirito him self, when he was taking a nap under a tree and enjoyed the weather. There r people who worked to buy a house where to live, old people relaxing and fishing, Yui an IA which got a conscience it self created by "you know who :)" to maintain the system and observe feelings that people has developed in the game. However she only found despair until she met kirito and asuna that teached her Hope and Love. Furthermore others r stay trapped in the idea of death that they've became murders and kill others to collect their goods (notion of Darwin theory of evolution introduced and a world with criminals from now on, I say well done to Akihiko ;)).
An expected ending in ep 14 with around 4000 victims (personally I played SaoIF an adaptation mobile game of sao by Namco and I died many times also (without mentionning those red players ^-^). This final episode gathered and all the effort, trainning , works of every Sao players did through 2 years. Somehow for me the last episode delivered a message of Hope through all the players who has suffered aswell as their family. Seeing Kirito woke up with his weak body and still managed to gather all his force to walk straight and to find his lover was wow wonderful :).
Anyways I believe that's the ending Akihiko wanted. Indeed an relieving expression showed through his smile when he got stabbed by kirito. He wanted to find someone trustable that he could pass on Aincralf and make it last...
2nd Arc:
A new VRMMORPG created after Sao which actually could does serious damage to people brains and that could delete their memories. I won't go on the detail for spoils but even if the synopsis looked poor the story was well done. We got some new ideas on ALfheim online: people could actually feel hungry or fatigue in the game even that their real bodies dont (4D game now :)) but on the top of all people could now feel pains which we couldn't in Sao. We find the desire of Man to fly. We got a interesting and questionable "incest" case abt Kirito and Suguha... Falling in love with some1 and suddenly found that they r our family or would u fall in love consciously with ur sister/brother? We got a light description abt the characters daily life. The impact that let in people that survived after Sao incident, we dont see a lot of consequences but the first one we could see that moment when kirito got headache when he saw blood and when he almost killed Sugo when they first met irl in order to save asuna. Good ending nothing to add :) .
