Aqua is a great manga that takes place in literally a new world. It would be a good choice for people that wish to visit Italy, expecially Venice in particular.
STORY~
I gave this story a 10 for a couple reasons. The first reason is because I really thought it had a unique plot. It's not often that you find a manga taking place on Mars (now called "Aqua" after 150 years of terraforming) in a city called Neo-Venezia, a replica of "Manhome's" (earth) city of Venice. It follows Akari Mizunashi, who is a teen girl coming from Manhome to find a job as an undine in
...
Neo-Venezia. She trains under the guidance of Alicia, a famous undine, and meets friends such as Aika. I'll discuss more about the characters later.
The story is remarkable, also, because of my love for Venice. As I said earlier, anybody with a fascination of Venice, or Italy in general, would enjoy this manga. It mixes Italian culture (such as Venetian festivals and customs) with the foods and names of Japan.
ART~
The art in this manga is amazing. The way Kozue Amano draws her characters might not be too spectacular, but the backgrounds are incredibly detailed, as if you're really seeing Venice. You can see the buildings and gondolas with detail that most manga leave out. If you're looking for a manga because of the art, this might be the one for you. However, I'm not saying the characters are bad. They aren't spectacular, but the characters are also very well drawn.
CHARACTER~
The characters in the manga are quite enjoyable. They all have unique personalities and don't share the same traits. For example, not all the characters are running around making sure the house is clean and that everyone is happy.
Akari Mizunashi is the main character, who is easy-going and likes to enjoy the gondola rather then take it too seriously. Akari often stops to help people when they need it, such as helping a lost tourist.
Next is Alicia, a famous gondolier who is training Akari. She is often helping sitting in Akari's gondola, offering her advice. Also, if Akari wants a passenger, Alicia is required to be present in the gondola, so you see a lot of Alicia during the story.
Finally is Aika, a stubborn and hot-tempered girl who can be kind at times, too. Aika works for a sister company of undines, and she meets Akari when she comes to visit Alicia, her "idol". Aika is often chastising Akari when Akari gets distracted from a task.
~~~
Overall, this manga is amazing. It might be because I dream of living in Venice someday, and that caused me to love the art even more. I think I would've still loved this manga even if I didn't like Venice so much. It's a must-read for people who like light and easy-going manga.
I enjoyed reading Alice 19th very much. The only genre I could think of giving this is Drama, so if you love a good romance then this is the manga for you!
~Story~
I thought the story was pretty good. It certainly wasn't the most amazing manga I've ever read, but it was quite good. This manga obviously has a strong moral about words, and how you should use them for kindness and not rudeness. It follows a girl, whose sister has fallen to the emotional "darkness" of her soul, and needs to be rescued, and the story progresses from there. Also, relationships develop and become quite
...
apparent.
I think the reason I liked this so much was because it didn't drag on and on about how they love each other and how they need to get together like some manga does. The storyline was always progressing and that kept me entertained, not bored out of my mind.
~Art~
The art was pretty good; it wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing, either. Yu Watase did a nice job portraying the characters and what their current emotion was. Also, when you see a shot of the entire city, it's very pretty and I think the author did a wonderful job. However, if you're looking for manga just based on the art, you might not want to choose Alice 19th, depending on your taste.
~Characters~
I loved the characters for this manga! There was obvious progression of the characters' love interests and traits. I think the author chose perfect characters for this story, as all the characters fit nicely with the storyline. There is Alice, the younger sister who starts out wary of her actions and shy; Mayura, the older sister who is very pretty and gets what she wants when she wants it; Kyo, the handsome male protagonist who helps Alice throughout the story; Nyozeka, the bunny Lotis master that accompanies Alice and Kyo on their mission; Frey, who is a flirty Lotis master that came from Norway to help Alice and Kyo. There are also a few other characters that accompany them towards the end of the story.
~
Overall, I gave this manga a 9 because I thought Yu Watase did a nice job with the story and the romance between the characters. It was an enjoyable manga and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new, shoujo-ish romance manga to read.
The Castle of Cagliostro is a really great movie. It's obviously quite old, seeing as how the animation can be choppy at times, but the characters are great and the story is wonderful.
Story-
The storyline of this movie is well-developed and fast-paced. Unlike some Miyazaki movies, the Castle of Cagliostro has a fast-paced storyline that is very easy to understand.
Art-
The art in this movie is alright... It's certainly not the best from Hayao Miyazaki, considering it's one of his first films, but the art is still good. The backgrounds and
buildings, however, are very beautiful and realistic, and the characters look a little like cartoons.
...
Sound-
The music in the movie was pretty good and enjoyable. When there was music (which there often was) it fit very well to the current situation or setting.
Characters-
The characters begin well-developed and stay that way. I really wish that the character's could've developed a bit more throughout the movie because their personality was the same at the end as it was in the beginning.
The main character is Lupin, a skilled theif who is also very relaxed and tends to joke around. There's also Lupin's assistant gunman, Jigen, who often questions Lupin but always ends up doing what he says. There's also Clarice, the "damsel in distress", the GroundsKeeper of the castle and his dog Carl, and the Count, a twisted, evil, and double-crossing man.
--
I really enjoyed this movie because of it's characters and storyline. The music was a nice touch as well. But if you're looking for a movie based on the art, you should probably pick another Miyazaki movie as this movie is not his best.
I gave everything about this manga a 10 because I felt that it was 100% deserving of it. I would gladly recommend this manga to anyone looking for romance, sci-fi, shonen, and an overall good read.
Story~
The story was quite amazing and well-developed. It develops smoothly as the manga progress. It's well balanced as it does not have tons of dramatic events, but it doesn't progress slowly. I think it's one of CLAMP's best works, and that's quite the statement considering CLAMP often has great story line's. I also thought the writing was realistic; the 19-year-old actually sounded like a 19-year-old, and not a 30-year-old or
...
something, which sometimes happens when a manga is not well-written. Also unlike some other mangas, I found the ending to be appropriate for the story and not dramatic; it was something the reader's wanted.
Art~
The art was also very amazing and pleasing. It was detailed yet not overwhelming with tons of lines and markings that make it hard for your eyes to stay on the picture. The covers were very beautiful, always focusing on one color yet the figure was always in a different outfit and in a different pose. One thing I found especially pleasing about this manga was the backgrounds and buildings. Every object and building was skillfully drawn and realistic.
Characters~
I found the characters to be wonderful for this manga. Every character has a wonderful place in the storyline. There's Hideki, the poor cram-school student that has almost no luck at all in the big city; Chi, the beautiful persocom (humanoid computer) that Hideki finds in the trash who also carries an amazing secret; Shimbo, Hideki's classmate and neighbor who always lends a helping hand; Hideki's Landlady, who is more significant to the story then she lets on and is also very kind; and Yumi, the young girl who works with Hideki and has the hots for him, but has an emotional sore due to persocoms.
Summary~
I really loved this manga, and I would gladly recommend it to ANYONE looking to start a manga. Despite it's feminine covers, I would say this manga is more shonen due to it's mature themes, woman figures, and sci-fi story line. However, this manga would no doubt be a great read for any gender. I really enjoyed this manga because of it's characters, beautiful art, and heartwarming story.
Please note that this manga is OT for ages 16+ and I don't think you should read it unless you can handle f-bombs, tasteful nudity, and mild fan service/mature themes.
I'm very surprised there isn't already a review for +anima.
+Anima is a very unique manga in it's storyline and characters. Although +anima doesn't have a set storyling except for the characters exploring new places and meeting acquaintances, it is still very enjoyable.
The characters are very well developed. Frequently at the end of a volume, Natsumi Mukai will often have a page or two describing the characters. As you progress in the manga, you'll notice that the characters become more and more developed with traits that make them unique.
I really loved this manga for it's great art, wonderful characters, and it was very enjoyable.
...
It's still running, so there's more fun to come!
