I’m a pretty big Lucario and Pokémon fan, capable of dealing with some incredibly childish and stupid manga, but even I could barely make it through this. Let’s just say there’s a reason it’s only one volume. The art at first seemed somewhat unique, based on the cover, but the actual manga art is a joke compared to the Pokémon Adventures manga. The faces just kind of look like a ripoff of Slayers (of all things) except with none of the amazing facial expressions, awesome fights and sick magical attacks of that manga. They managed to draw Lucario decently at least (most of the Pokémon
...
look fine) in fact one of the panels with him is even cool enough that I tried drawing it in Flipnote when I was younger.
What kills it is the terrible fight choreography. Honestly when Pokémon Adventures, or the Diamond and Pearl manga predated this I don’t understand why it looks so bad.
Perhaps it could be saved if the story was decent, but it isn’t. Basically the main character is a Robin Hood style their who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. For some reason, he keeps this identity secret from his close friends Andy even his family. Id understand keeping it private from strangers but lying to his family and friends constantly makes no sense since it just leads to them getting hurt. For instance, he intentionally makes his Lucario fight weaker whenever he isn’t playing his “Phatnom Theif” persona, which constantly leads to the two of them getting beat up and even made fun of by his own sister. This is incredibly stupid and a bad way to encourage people to play your games that are entirely about fighting stronger and having a bond with your Pokémon.
Later on in the manga a girl he knew for some reason (I wasn’t paying attention) gets kidnapped and mind controlled and he beats her easily, and the scene just completely ignores her unconscious body in the corner while the characters go on talking. There’s actually a lot of weird kind of disturbing stuff like that in the manga, like Lucario stabs someone in the butt with his spike at one point in a panel which is kind of hilarious but also incredibly weird.
Overall, don’t waste your time.

Anime was a huge part of my, and I’m guessing a lot of other people’s childhoods. I grew up watching shows like Pokemon, and DragonBall Z, but I never really found a show that made me desperate to see every new episode every week. That was, until I was searching for a new show to watch one night, and I stumbled across a little show called Cardcaptor Sakura. I don’t remember how I saw it, it might have been when I was staying with relatives in Australia, because I remember Australia got a really good dub of the show back in the day.
Anyway, I had
...
no idea what it was. But it was the episode about Sakura going to a summer home, and she met an old man who lost his daughter.
It was one of the most emotional things I had ever seen, I had to see the rest of the show, but unfortunately we had to leave the next day and I never got to know what the show was called.
So years later, I’m a teenager and I’m searching on YouTube for anime openings and stuff to watch, and I came the 3rd Opening Theme on YouTube.
Needless to say, it was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. The animation was so pretty, the classic composition by Yoko Kano and singing by Maaya Sakamoto. It instantly became my favorite anime opening ever.
and I instantly knew, this was the show I had seen as a kid. So I watched the show all the way to the end and I have loved it ever since. I could go into more detail, such as how every character has such an extreme amount of depth, even the background characters feel like real people, or how beautiful the animation is especially for just 1997 (I mean compare this to the original season of Pokémon which I still love and there’s practically no comparisson) or how Touya (Sakura’s brother) and his relationship with Yukito is still the most beautiful gay romance I’ve ever seen in a series, or how Sakura, Kereberos and Tomoyo’s friendship is so realistic and adorable that no anime has even managed to endear you to characters as much. But I think I’ve made my point, CardCaptor Sakura is my favorite anime EVER. Nothing else is as beautiful.

An excerpt from my Lucario and the Mystery of Mew Review. Watch the full thing here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tcgJ2BZHPVg
“Pokemon hit the United States with unbridled success as children all over the world began to tune in to Ash Misty and Brock's adventures all over the world. It captured a raw, childlike enjoyment of seeing cute animals violenting engage in battles for the sake of a young child master everyone could relate too. But with the engagement of the morality of Pokémon capture being questioned on the daily, it was clear to Gamefreak it was time to change things up. With the late turn of the century and
...
the debut of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl and the fourth generation of the series, Satoshi and his team took a great risk, taking the series in unheard of directions and culminating with the release of a more mature and adutlt film based on the series on July 15, 2005 as Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. This huge risk paid off and the fourth generation of the series became known by fans as one of the most groundbreaking and memorable entries, pushing the series into years of sucess, leading up to today with the series still going strong!
What makes Lucario and the Mystery of Mew so strong and allows it to stand the test of time is that it presents its titular lead, Lucario, with perhaps one of most empathetic stories in the entire series. Lucario didn’t fight for his human friend Aaron, he wasn’t capture by Aaron in a Pokeball. No, Lucario and Aaron went through a literal war together and became buddies. This is without a doubt one of the most badas* feats in the Pokémon series so far, and the tragic fate that befalls these two friends says so much about this seemingly “perfect” childlike world. The fact that such empathetic and truly free characters met inch a hard fate is one of the most subversive statements I’ve ever seen an anime make.”

I still really love Production IG’s attempt at the Trigger esque sakuga scenes of Gainax’s original, but I think what Progressive and Alternative truly lacked was depth and heart. FLCL original felt like it started off as an incredibly well animated joke for a bunch of talented voice actors and artists to relax on, but quickly proved all of us wrong with amazing depth and characters that are memorable FOREVER. Nothing captures this better than the Pillows music, which captures the show’s tone perfectly.
Meanwhile these new seasons mostly reuse music from the old show (no matter how great the new stuff is) just like the
...
whole idea of the show rehashes old ideas without ever being as memorable or deep. How absolutely fitting.
Even then, I didn’t HATE, these seasons. Still gonna give them a 7 purely because of how much I loved the sakuga moments.
