I heard that this show was amazing, that the characters were wonderful, and so was the story and music behind all of it. So, with that in mind, I was stoked to see how "great" this show was, and I honestly was disappointed. Let me clarify:
The animation and music were expertly done and I loved how when the music started, I would get super excited for what might happen next, and not only was the animation smooth and clean but really aesthetically pleasing and beautiful :)
However, as the show went on, things only got worse.
The story's pace was dragged out a bit longer than I
...
would've liked and the characters would constantly monologue over EVERYTHING they were doing, sometimes repeating what we know and it got annoying if not completely boring at times, but I didn't want to drop the show because I had faith it would get good.
Now, the worst part about the show probably has to be the characters. I know I know, you probably think, "The characters were amazing! What the heck is wrong with you, you're wrong".
But hear me out. Kousei, Watari, Emi, and Takeshi were the best characters throughout the show and I stayed only because of them. Hiroko, Nagi, and Tsubaki were bearable so they weren't much of a bother to me. But the absolute worst character is Kaori for sure. Kousei clearly has PTSD and a lot of trauma stemming from his childhood with his mother and how she was horribly abusive to him, and Kaori would consistently beat him (although the show made it playful because "she's innocent and sweet") and that bothered me a lot. Kousei wouldn't feel up for playing and Kaori would berate and yell at him for it, and although she did end up becoming Kousei's reason for healing a little, she still wasn't a good person and shouldn't be praised as one. She had to be the most annoying person, and not only that, but she lied to someone that she claimed to love (Kousei) about her feelings for him, only to tell him after she dies. And all throughout the show Kousei is drowning in his insecurities because he feels he isn't good enough and truthfully Kaori doesn't actually fix that, she just lets him believe that she likes Watari and not him. I know some of you are going to come at me for that, but think about it for a second. I considered dropping this show because her personality is just- so bad for a person to have, but the show has to play it off because she's dying and she gets to act however she wants since she'll be gone soon, but I don't buy that you can be borderline horrible to someone you love just because you're dying. The absolute last thing you'd want to do IS HURT THEM.
Lastly, this show doesn't deal with PTSD very well as it makes it seem like it's something to easily recover from with the power of love, (they romanticize it and frankly that’s insulting), but that's far from the truth. Kousei was hurting and all anyone cared about was him playing the piano??? That bugged me so much that I had to take a break from watching the show because I couldn't believe that most the characters thought "We know it hurts that you were abused and your mom was bad, but you gotta play because music will solve everything and we need to win this" Like? No. That isn't how life works. And I wished that they had fleshed that out A LOT BETTER because it wasn't good and doesn't send a good message to people out there.
