Higurashi When They Cry really threw me for a loop. At first I thought I was watching a simple slice of life anime set in a small peaceful village. The characters seem friendly enough and everything feels pretty calm until it’s not. Suddenly it takes a hard turn into intense psychological horror and honestly I wasn’t ready for it The way the show flips between these two extremes is what got me hooked one moment you’re enjoying light banter and the next you’re witnessing some truly disturbing events. It’s such a jarring but effective shift
The storytelling here is anything but straightforward The narrative resets after

every arc which completely threw me off at first I spent a lot of time confused trying to figure out why the story kept restarting but once I got into the rhythm of it I realized how brilliant it was. Every arc adds new layers to the mystery of Hinamizawa and you slowly piece together what’s really going on It’s like a puzzle you have to figure out and I love that.
The characters are also a big part of what makes Higurashi so gripping Keiichi, Rika and the others kept me guessing all the time are they the victims or are they the ones causing all this chaos The show plays with your mind constantly especially during moments like where Keiichi and Rena spoke in the road where she suddenly changes from cute to cruel in a instant that where my whole perception of a character completely changed
That being said, I know this show isn’t for everyone It’s pretty violent at times and the timeline resets might be annoying for some people. If you’re someone who likes a clear linear story it might be tough to stick with but if you enjoy psychological horror and don’t mind a bit of mind bending mystery Higurashi is a total win. It’s the kind of show that gets under your skin and stays with you long after you’ve finished an episode. I definitely lost sleep over some of those scenes.
If you’re into something that’s dark unsettling and makes you think give this one a shot just be warned
