Alright this review will have a few spoilers ahead.
You have been warned.
Cons:
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works is about the Fifth Holy Grail that is supposed to be like a battle royale among seven capable mages and the seven powerful servants of the said mages. However, it doesn't really feel like there is a war going on. The show started off with a lot of potential but most of it was wasted. Majority of the episodes only show us the interactions/conversations between the main characters and honestly it feels like a slice of life anime. If you have watched Fate/ Zero, you know how interactions and
...
chit chats between characters can be a game changer for the plot (Yes, I am talking about Kirei and Gilgamesh) but it most definitely doesn't work that way here. The three of the main characters Rin, Shirou and Saber are often seen around doing almost nothing that serves a purpose to the plot. These three come up with their lousy strategies only to fail and then rinse and repeat until you go the final fight of the series. Also, can we talk about how Saber's character was massacred here? Lol. Moving onto Shirou Emiya, the protagonist of the story, this boy really does almost nothing except for talking about his ideals and arguing how his skewed sense of justice is above everyone else's goals. But the biggest weapon he has under his sleeves is not his ideals but the plot armour. Honestly, how does this boy get saved every single time against such powerful masters/servants without having any good skills at the beginning? Then you see this same dude coming up with perfect skills to beat one of the strongest servants ever without much developments happening except for his fight with Archer.
Pros:
While UBW has its flaws, it is still somewhat enjoyable when we get to see more of the other characters and grail war. Characters like Caster, Gilgamesh, Ilya, Archer and the rest do make the progress of the show a bit smoother with their backstories and intentions during the Holy Grail. The fight scenes are an absolute treat to the eyes like ufotable really did make it feel like Unlimited Budget Works. The soundtracks are also pretty great.
To sum it up, if you are a fan of the franchise you will still enjoy it quite a bit but it does fall short in many aspects. It could have been so much more if it wasn't continuously dawdling around and trying to spoon feed few of the main characters which is a little odd and disappointing considering this is from the fate franchise.
