Preliminary (8/? chp)
Kurogane Pukapuka Tai is a sometimes-comic yuri unwanted harem story with the uncommonly serious setting of an Imperial Japanese Navy commerce-raiding heavy cruiser in 1943. For some unexplained reason, the ship, the Unebi, is crewed entirely by women except for its old zen master-like Captain, who rarely speaks. This being a yuri story, so far only one of the women has turned out to be heterosexual. They meet unexplained large numbers of other female-crewed ships on both sides, too, again with a suspicious lack of heterosexuality.

Despite that, the story is pretty good so far, much better than I generally expect from a ...

Angel Heart (Manga) add
Preliminary (137/363 chp)
This manga is a follow-up and alternate history to the series "City Hunter", diverging from the previous series with a "what-if" and going in a very different direction. That said, it isn't necessary to read "City Hunter" first; I didn't, and had no problems understanding what was going on. It's a seinen manga, so it deals with adult subjects, including a lot of sexual humor, but there isn't much that's explicit; the most fanservice-y it gets is in the full-page title page illustrations, as is normal.

I liked that this series has an emotional breadth. It's sometimes a comedy, sometimes full of action, ...

Preliminary (31/35 chp)
This is a well-written vampire romance manga which has all the typical elements, including a fairly straight playing of the typical Japanese vampire type (not-undead, sunlight not instantly fatal, vampirism is not an infection, vampires are rich and successful). As a josei manga, this is written for a more adult audience and the initial setting is a workplace.

As in many good romances, the man and woman are not instantly attracted; she thinks he's essentially a slick, irresponsible man-whore (before she even finds out about the vampirism) and he thinks she's a tediously conservative and boringly professional secretary. Of course (since this is ...

A short and (mostly) sweet yuri series for which you have to crank your suspension of disbelief pretty high, but it's entertaining if you can. The titular Iono is the young Queen of some small nation somewhere who is constantly on the hunt for more young women to bring back to her nation as her concubines; she already has hundreds if not thousands, but her appetites are insatiable. Deciding she doesn't have enough dark-haired beauties in her harem, she visits Japan and is captivated by young Eto; the series follows her pursuit. Iono is a very aggressive suitor indeed.

The series features no ...

Preliminary (88/148 chp)
This is a hard one to review, because it's so variable in quality. The best bits are really good, while the worse bits are really annoying.

The premise and overall theme are great. It's a quite different take on the whole ugly-duckling-becomes-a-swan storyline that should be familiar from things like "My Fair Lady", "Pretty Woman", and all the other stories that have a man turn a girl into a lady. Here, even four highly motivated pretty-boys have a heck of a time with just one very difficult young woman. She doesn't want to change, not in the least, and while the boys ...

Karin (Manga) add
Preliminary (39/63 chp)
Karin Maaka is constructed of 95% pure embarrassment. If you have a low tolerance for that most defining of traits of the shy high-schooler, you won't like this. If you don't mind it, and you like romantic comedies with a supernatural theme, this is a good series to read.

I also like that neither female lead (Karin) nor male lead (Kenta) is a loser or an idiot (although both are capable of a lot of idiocy nonetheless, being teenagers in love). They're both responsible young people; Karin is made to pay her own way by her parents, while Kenta keeps a ...

I'm a reader that's fairly new to manga, so these reviews of mine should be read with that in mind.

On the surface, Rosario+Vampire is a lot of why I never got into Japanese manga & anime before; it's chock-full of clichés. The school setting, the unwanted harem, the monster-of-the-week common plot, etc etc. I was pointed to it by friends who told me "It's better than it sounds", and indeed it is. For one thing, it gets better with time. The art improves, the stories improve, and the characters improve.

The story does get darker from about half-way through this first run, ...
